MLB Picks: Detroit Tigers at Texas Rangers
Written July 27, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
The Detroit Tigers come off taking three of four against division rival Chicago White Sox. Overall though, they have went 4-6 in their last 10 overall which is due mostly to their hitting. Surprisingly runs have come at a premium for what was thought to be a powerful offense in the beginning of the season. Magglio Ordonez has been awful in a way nobody can explain. Miguel Cabrera has been fantastic like expected hitting .330 with 19 homers and 53 RBIs. He is with out a doubt their most dominant player. Curtis Granderson, a 2009 all-star selection has been very solid himself along with Brandon Inge. Tonight, Armando Galarraga takes the mound. He is 5-8 with a 4.82 ERA this season. Not so fast though, do not be fooled by those poor numbers as Armando is much more talented then those numbers show. He is coming off three straight solid starts and has a 2.66 ERA in three July starts. In one start against the Rangers this season he went 7 innings allowing 1 run on only 5 hits while picking up the victory. Expect him to pitch well tonight, perhaps even the offense will help him out a bit. Monday’s MLB lines have the Rangers -145 against the Tigers with the total set at 10 runs.
The Texas Rangers are 6-1 in their last seven games and have proved to the world that they are for real. This is a team that can hit and pitch well. While everybody has been waiting for Texas to pull their usual fading act, it has not happened. Nelson Cruz has 23 homers and 55 RBIs while Ian Kinsler has 23 homers and 59 RBIs. All-star Michael Young has been fantastic as well while Josh Hamilton is back and healthy for the stretch run. The Rangers also have plenty of role players that play crucial roles and supply big numbers. Tonight, they send 23 year old rookie Tommy Hunter to the mound who is 2-1 with a 2.17 ERA in five starts this season. While the kid has been great, he faces a veteran lineup tonight with a good mix of pop and patience. Now, I understand that Detroit has been marginal from the plate while Hunter has been anything but that. The rookie though is due for a bad outing and the line gives you great value here. Notes below.
Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Tigers are 3-9 in their last 12 Monday games. However, the Tigers have dominated Texas this season winning all six games they have played vs one another. Detroit is also 14-3 against the Rangers dating back over the last 17 games. Like I said above, the value is to good here to pass up on. So take Detroit as the underdog as the bang for your buck sits here nicely. In reference to the O/U, The UNDER is 21-6 in the last 27 games in Texas when the Rangers are the favorite. The UNDER is also 20-7 in the Tigers last 27 road games they have played. You can call that a coincidence, but I won’t. A final score of 5-3 Tigers is what i am looking at.
Jordan’s Picks: Detroit Tigers +127 & UNDER 10 Runs (+100)
