MLB Picks: Detroit Tigers at Minnesota Twins

Written July 3, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz

tigers-twins-preview-070309The Tigers are 43-25 on the season and currently own the top spot in AL Central race. Detroit recently lost two of three in Oakland which is something that will hurt them down the road if they continue to drop series’ to below average teams. Hot and cold would be an accurate way to describe this teams hitting. Miguel Cabrera is one of the leagues best players, his .331 batting average is amongst tops for first baseman’s as he also shows power with 16 home runs and 47 RBIs. Brandon Inge has been a major part of this teams success as he is tied for the team lead in homers with 18 and leads the club with 52 RBIs. While Curtis Granderson isn’t hitting for much average (.257), he does have 18 homers and 43 RBIs. Placido Polanco and Magglio Ordonez have performed at a very low level for their talents. On the mound tonight is 24 year old rookie Luke French who will be making his first career start. Facing a team like Minnesota with a one-two punch of Mauer and Morneau is a tough break for the kid. He is not an extremely hard thrower as he relies on location for success. Look for French to struggle a bit but be picked up by his offense in a big way. Granderson will be key tonight as his speed will be crucial.  Friday’s MLB odds show the Minnesota Twins -163 against the Tigers, and the over/under set for 9 runs.

The Minnesota Twins are 41-39 on the season and very much in the middle of the AL Central race. The Twins have won three consecutive series in which all of them came on the road (@ Milwaukee, @ St. Louis and @ Kansas City). Joe Mauer continues to dazzle with his bat. In only 204 at bats this season, Mauer is hitting .392 with 14 home runs and 44 RBIs. His partner in crime, former MVP, Justin Morneau is hitting .309 with 19 homers and 64 RBIs and if you ask me, is right back in the mix of AL MVP talk this season. Jason Kubel has been a nice player for this team hitting .308 with 13 homers and 42 RBIs. Denard Span has been up and down as the teams lead off man and Joe Crede has been the same as their everyday third baseman. Kevin Slowey gets the nod tonight. His 10-3 record is superb however he posts a 4.41 ERA to boot. He is coming off his worst start of the year in a game that he only lasted three innings. In his only start against the Tigers this season he went six innings of one run ball and picked up the win. However, he gave up eight hits and Detroit hit .333 against him. Expect a bad start from Slowey tonight and for The offense to help him get a no decision.

Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Tigers and Twins are both 6-4 in their last 10 games. Detroit has gone 3-8 in their last 11 road games while Minnesota is 58-27 in their last 85 home games. The Twins are also 4-1 against the Tigers this season. I am not impressed and I remain unfazed by Minnesota’s home record. Detroit has a better offense and has proved that they can hit Slowey. Expect the rookie French to struggle a bit and the OVER to crush tonight. However, we are going to put a small play on the Tigers as well.

Jordan’s Picks: Detroit Tigers/Minnesota Twins OVER 9 (-125) BEST BET & Tigers +153 (Small Play)

WHAMMY! The red hot streak continues last night as the White Sox won 4-1. We hit our double up on them as the ML and RL both came through. I am running out of clever catch phrases and statements as cash in on an everyday basis. Let’s just ride this out and stack pile that green. Comments always welcome
