Tim Sylvia vs. Fedor Emelianenko
Written July 9, 2008 by Jason Lowry
Not to often due you get an event that produces the fights like the one that is not backed by the UFC, but on Saturday July 19th Affliction will be hosting its first ever MMA event, and its headlined by the WAMMA Heavyweight Championship bout between Fedor Emelianenko and Tim Sylvia. The fight will be held at the Honda Center, and while there are a handful of good fights in this one Jason Lowry is going to spend a little extra time on the main event in this one. We are going to take a closer look at each fighter and how they look coming into the fight, and then we are going to give you our prediction on the upcoming fight.
Tim “Maine-iac” Sylvia (24-4) +300 odds at Bodoglife.com
Sylvia might not have the best record to show in this one, but all 4 of his losses have come against some of the toughest fighters in the MMA. It will be the first time he squares off with Emelianenko, and needs to grab the win in this one after losing 2 of his last 3 fights, including the most recent against Antonio Nogueira. Sylvia has a 6′8 frame that definitely gives him a reach advantage in this one, but the question will be if he can keep the fight off the ground where Emelianenko seems to be at his best.
Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko (28-1-1) -450 odds at Bodoglife.com
Emelianenko is considered by many to be the top MMA heavyweight fighter in the world. Only one man has ever stepped in the way of this 6ft beast, and that was Tsuyoshi Kohsaka back in December of 2000. Since that fight Emelianenko has rolled off 24 straight decisions including a revenege bout against Kohsake. He has ended the last 5 of his fights by submission and it seems like he has a great ability to get the arm bar locked in. Being the last guy to hold the PRIDE heavyweight title, you know that you have an animal in this guy.
Prediction: Fedor Emelianenko - 450
While it looks like Sylvia is considered to be a big underdog in this one, we don’t think its going to be all that easy for Emelianenko to win this one. This fight will likely go to at least round 3 giving fans just what the want, and we got Emelianenko taking it with a submission in this one.
