Titans Bengals Predictions
Written September 11, 2008 by Jack Jones
Week 2 gets under way for the Tennessee Titans when they head to Cincinnati to take on the Bengals. and we have Jack Jones to take a look at the NFL odds before offering his score predictions on the game. The current point spread sits at the Bengals -1 over the Titans with the total at 37.
Both of these teams are having to deal with some off the field issues as this game gets underway, but Tennessee has the bigger problems. Not only did they lose their starting quarterback, Vince Young, to a sprained right knee, but reports are coming out of Tennessee that he isn’t in the right place mentally. Possibly suffering from depression, or just not wanting to play football anymore, whatever it is it’s distracting the team.
In the fourth quarter of the team’s win over Jacksonville, it appeared like Young didn’t want to go back into the game after the home fans booed him for throwing his second interception. Then the problems continued Monday when he skipped his MRI test to see a psychologist. When Young left his home without telling anyone Monday night, his family called head coach Jeff Fisher out of concern for his well being. The Titans are trying to say it’s all one big misunderstanding, but Young’s mom even came out and publicly said with all the negative attention her son just isn’t sure he wants to do this anymore. At least the Titans have Kerry Collins as a backup and he has the experience of playing in a Super Bowl.
The Bengals don’t have near the off-field problems. Chad Johnson wasn’t allowed to wear Ocho Cinco on the back of his jersey for the opener due to “administrative problems.” With the talk about his recent name change one might forget just how ugly things got for this offense last week, so let’s hope the focus on practice returns to the field and not on the jersey this week.
Tennessee did a great job of moving the ball last week with 309 yards against the Jaguars. The 17-10 final was closer than it should have been as turnovers plagued the Titans. Collins only threw two passes, but he completed them both for 65 yards. The most exciting part of the game for Tennessee was the play of Chris Johnson, their no. 24 pick in the first-round of the draft. He compiled 127 total yards, including 93 on the ground to ignite the offense. LenDale White also got his season off to a good start running the ball and Justin Gage caught four passes for 98 yards and a score. Tight end Bo Scaife had a career high with 105 yards on six receptions to lead the way in receiving.
It wasn’t pretty for the Bengals defense last week when the Ravens went for 358 yards against them. Cincy’s first round draft pick looked good in his debut as well, as linebacker Keith Rivers led the team with ten tackles. Johnathan Joseph did return a fumble for a touchdown last week, scoring more points than the offense. As bad as the Bengal offense was a week ago, it isn’t going to get much easier in taking on the Titans on Sunday. The Titans had seven sacks and held the Jaguars to just 189 yards of total offense in the win. Cornerback Cortland Finnegan had a career-high two picks last week and is going for his third straight game with at least one interception.
Quarterback Carson Palmer had one of the worst games we have ever seen out of him against the Ravens, throwing for less than 100 yards on a 10-for-25 performance. He was intercepted once and never reached the end zone for what amounted to a 35.3 passer rating. The Bengals had just 154 total yards as a team, making them one of the worst statistical offenses in the NFL heading into week 2.
