Tennessee Titans v. Baltimore Ravens Recap
Written October 5, 2008 by Jack Jones
Final: Titans 13, Ravens 10
The Tennessee Titans remain undefeated after five weeks of the 2008 season, picking up a 13-10 win over the Ravens in Baltimore. At 5-0 the Titans are off to the best start in franchise history.
Kerry Collins was 17-for-32 with 163 yards and a touchdown, but his two first-quarter interceptions dug an early hole for Tennessee. He came back to redeem himself in the fourth by hitting tight end Alge Crumpler for a touchdown inside the two minute warning to cap off an 80-yard drive. Bo Scaife came up big with seven catches for 72 yards and kicker Rob Bironas did his part by nailing both of his field goal attempts. The Titan offense was stagnant in the first half, only gaining 69 yards and the team ended with it’s lowest mark of the season at 210 total yards.
The Ravens Joe Flacco threw two interceptions of his own on a 18-for-28 passing day. He only had 153 passing yards with Todd Heap being his top target with four catches for 41 yards. Willis McGahee couldn’t find much room to run against the Titan defense, only picking up 64 yards on 22 attempts.
The game-winning drive for the Titans started with 6:07 to play and the ball at their own 20. Things didn’t look good when Collins threw an incomplete pass on third down, but a roughing-the-passer call gave the team a first down and extended the drive. Three plays later Collins hit Chris Davis to move Tennessee into Baltimore territory. He faced another tough third down on the Raven 26 with only 2:24 left, but Scaife’s 15 yard reception kept the drive alive. It was the very next play that Collins hit Crumple to give the Titans a three point advantage.
Flacco couldn’t do anything when he got the ball back, throwing an interception on his second pass of the drive, allowing the Titans to run all but 25 seconds from the clock. Again, the Raven offense went nowhere and a false start penalty drained the final seconds off of the clock.
The scoring got started when Baltimore took advantage of an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty called on the Titans, keeping the drive alive and advancing the ball into Tennessee teritory. Flacco then took the Ravens to the 20 before Matt Stove kicked a 38-yard field goal to put Baltimore ahead 3-0.
Collins struggled in throwing interceptions on the first two Titan drives, but when Tennessee picked off a Flacco pass to give them the ball at the 17, the Titans got on the board with a Bironas 35-yard field goal.
The Ravens had a chance to take the lead into the break, but Stover missed a 45-yard field goal to end the half.
Baltimore did jump ahead after scoring on their first drive of the second half. It was Le’Ron McClain stumbling into the endzone from the Titan one.
Bironas got the Titans on the board once again to start the fourth with a 26-yarder just over two minutes into the quarter. Making it 10-6 and setting up the exciting finish.
The NFL betting on this game was heavily on the Titans, and they ended up covering the NFL betting odds which were set at Tennessee -2.5.
