Top 4 NCAA Tournament Betting Tips

Written March 16, 2009 by Jack Jones

syracuse-basketballThe one thing you have to remember about NCAA basketball betting when the tournament rolls around is that all kinds of people are coming out of the wood work who haven’t been gambling on basketball all season long.  This means that the college basketball odds makers have to take into account a lot more public action than they do during the season.  This means that the experienced bettor can find value in the spreads and make a little bit of money this March.  If you want to handicap the games on your own, then take a look at these four NCAA tournament betting tips to help you win more bets.  If you want the help of an expert, get signed up for the college basketball picks offered by our experts.  If you are going to bet the games, sign up at BetUS and get a $500 bonus on a $500 deposit!

Fade Public Teams – You’ll notice this week that the media is going to fall in love with a few teams, both big schools and small.  Don’t fall into the trap of getting on a team’s band wagon just because the major media outlets are smothering you with coverage.  Good spots to look for are teams outside of the top 25 that are not in major conferences and to go against teams that came out of nowhere to win their conference tournaments.

Defense, Free Throws and Rebounding – You’ve heard it many times but it’s true, defense wins championships.  Don’t look at points per game though, but rather the oppositions field goal percentages.  Also look for the better rebounding teams as they tend to score more in the paint, which translates into more consistency than a team that relies on outside shooting that can go cold and struggle offensively.  If you are taking underdogs, those two stats are crucial, but if you are taking a small favorite then my stat to look for is free throw shooting.  When the game is coming to an end and a team is down they will start fouling, and if your team is a good free throw shooting club they should be able to put away the opposition.  If they don’t shoot very many free throws or a low percentage, you are setting yourself up for a frustrating loss.

Factor in Location – The NCAA tries to set up games so the teams are neutral floors, but if a team is playing close to their school you can count on more fans in the stands than if they are playing across the country.

Senior Leadership – If a school is going to go deep in the tournament they are going to have to have leadership, and it helps if the experience comes in the backcourt.  Strong guards will limit turnovers, beat presses, and handle half-court pressure.

If you follow these four NCAA tournament betting tips then you’ll be off to a great start at winning bets or your office pool.
