2010 Fiesta Bowl Odds: TCU vs Boise State

Written December 17, 2009 by Rock Henderson

The 2010 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl will feature a rematch between two of the most powerful non-BCS schools in college football. TCU managed to pull off a 17-16 win over the Boise State Broncos in the Poinsettia Bowl a year ago. Neither team has a chance to win the Sears Trophy, but finishing in the Top 5 when the final BCS rankings are released would be a huge accomplishment for both. The Horned Frogs are led by a ferocious defense, while the Broncos chances of winning this game hinge on the arm of sophomore quarterback Kellen Moore. According to our most recent college football lines, TCU is favored by 7 points.

Boise State is quietly proving year in and year out that they are one of the top programs in the country. Head coach Chris Peterson uses an array of junior college transfers and players that fly under the radar to produce top-tier teams. QB Kellen Moore is certainly the headliner on this team and has put up remarkable numbers in his second year under center. Moore’s season was so successful that he received votes in the Heisman race and made himself one of the favorites for the 2010 presentation. The Broncos have a lot of speed on both sides of the ball, but especially on offense. RB Jeremy Avery is the scat back for BSU and can break off long runs in a heart beat. WR Titus Young is a factor catching the ball and returning kicks. The junior college transfer has 71 catches for 969 yards and 10 touchdowns while being one of the most dangerous special teams players in the country. Senior Austin Pettis is another threat for Moore to utilize as the big play wide out has been on the receiving end of 14 of Moore’s 39 touchdown passes. Boise State’s defense ranks 13th nationally and is anchored by CB Kyle Wilson. They will face a tall task in slowing down a TCU offense that is averaging almost 470 yards per game. The TCU defense has been a cornerstone for Gary Patterson the past two seasons. They rank first nationally in yardage allowed and 6th in points allowed per game. The main different between last year’s team is that the offense is playing at a much higher level due to the improved play of QB Andy Dalton. The dual threat earned MWC Offensive Player of the Year honors by passing for almost 2500 yards and 22 touchdowns. He is also a threat with his legs as he was able to rush for 522 yards and three more scores. Bruising RB Joseph Turner leads the team in rushing as he has gained 732 yards from scrimmage and found the goal line 11 times. Four TCU players were able to eclipse the 500 yard mark rushing. WR Jeremy Kerley is TCU’s version of Boise State’s Titus Young. While not as much of a factor catching the ball, Kerley is a major factor returning kicks. He ranks 11th in punt return average and 20th in kick returns. The Horned Frog defense is a scary unit as a whole, but it all starts up front with sack master Jerry Hughes. His 11.5 sacks this season earned him All-American status. It will be interesting to see how much pressure he is able to get on Moore as the Bronco offense line allowed only five sacks all year.

This game has a lot of different angles it could take by the time the clock strikes zeroes. Both teams have explosive offenses and Boise State’s defense is widely underrated. I see this game coming down to who makes the most plays on special teams. Whoever is playing with a short field will have the decided advantage in a game that is so evenly matched. Titus Young and Kyle Wilson will share the stage to lead to the cover.

My husband and I were watching the Fiesta Bowl (BSU vs Oklahoma State). Towards the end, when it seemed very likely that Oklahoma would win, I said to my husband —

“Well, I’m going to pray that if BSU deserves to win, that God will help them.” He answered, “Awwwwww, you don’t need to pray about that.” Me — “Well, I’m going to,
anyway.” (I didn’t get down on my knees — just whispered a little prayer.) What a tremendous game — yayyyy, Broncos!! (–and thank you, Lord!!)

I must ‘fess up that I am actually a Vandal fan; my husband and two sons are graduates of U of I. I was employed by the U of I for 29 years. However, I was born and raised in Boise, so was acquainted with the Broncos long before the Vandals. However, when Vandals play the Broncos, I must keep my allegiance to the Vandals.

Well, on Monday evening, January 4, we will be watching the Broncos play TCU in the Fiesta Bowl. Once more, I will whisper a prayer, that IF THEY DESERVE TO WIN, God will lend a helping hand. Go, Broncos!!!!!
