Trainers at the 2008 Kentucky Derby

While many of us will be only focused on the horses names that are racing at the Kentucky Derby, there is a few other people that have a lot to do with how this horse will perform come race day. While the trainers are important and probably go more unnoticed than anyone who is involved in the race, the trainers are the guys that prepare and sign the jockeys to ride their horses during the race. So when you are getting ready to place your bet on the race, its always a good idea to see how much success the trainer has had in the past with other horses. So to help you out we are going to give you some big name trainers that have some big time horses racing at the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby.

Steve Asmussen

This guy is hands down the best trainer out there as he has an amazing 114 first place finishes, 80 second place finishes, and 60 third place finishes. On top of all that he has a career purse total of $3,578,499. Asmussen is training one of the top horses this weekend in Pyro, and though his odds have fallen due to his poor performance on his first synthetic track, we feel that this horse is one of the best horses racing this weekend. Asmussen made sure that Pyro has one of the best Jockeys in the business in Shaun Bridgmohan.

Bill Mott

Mott is the next best in career winnings behind Asmussen, but nowhere near the number of 1st place finishes, as he only has 23 first place finishes. While he has raced 300 less times than Asmussen. Mott has a couple big name horses racing at the derby in Court Vision and Z Humor. We really like what Court Vision brings to the table, and he is not only our sleeper but also many others at the Kentucky Derby. Z Humor has much worse odds to win at the derby and would be a complete shock if this horse pulls off the upset here. With Mott you can usually lock in a top 3 finishes and we are sure he will come through again this year.

Richard Dutrow Jr.

Dutrow Jr. is another big name that has won a lot of money training horses. In just 139 starts he has collected slightly more than $1,185,00. This in large part due to his 29 first place finishes, 24 second place finishes, and 22 third place finishes. So if you add those up Dutrow Jr. has 75 top 3 finishes, putting him at nearly 54% to finish in the top 3 when he has a horse in the race. Dutrow Jr. could very easily be adding to those numbers at the Kentucky Derby, where he will be racing his very strong 3-year-old thoroughbred Big Brown. Big Brown is your odds on favorite to win at the derby so it will be hard to keep this guy out of your top 3 when you are selecting your trifecta for this year’s race.

So here is a good look at some of the big trainers that are racing in this year’s Kentucky Derby.
