Troy at Florida Atlantic Odds

Written by -

Week 7 of the 2008 college football season starts tonight when Troy visits Florida Atlantic in Sun Belt conference action. This game should be a high scoring one as the odds makers have set the total at 51, with Troy being listed as a 3.5 point favorite over Florida Atlantic.

Last year this Florida Atlantic team exceeded expectations in winning the first bowl game in the program’s history, but this year hasn’t gone quite as well. Even though they are the returning conference champions and have 18 starters back, the Owls come into this game at 1-4 after losing a tough one at Middle Tennessee State on a last second Hail Mary pass. That game was also played on Tuesday night and televised on ESPN2.

If you are looking for a common opponent to gage who is going to come out on top here then look no further than Middle Tennessee State. Troy opened the season against the Blue Raiders and won by two touchdowns. The Trojans now sit at 2-2 after losing to Ohio State and Oklahoma State in their last two games. Those setbacks won’t hurt their chances to win the Sun Belt title, and we still think that they are one of the favorites to come out on top.

The Trojans have done a good job moving the ball offensively with over 441 total yards per game, ranking 21st in the nation and they should be able to put up big numbers tonight against a Florida Atlantic team that is giving up 417 yards and 31 points per contest. Every major category shows the Owls ranked 90th in the nation or worst, so expect plenty of points out of Troy tonight. The Owls are also one of those teams that seems to cover the spread a lot, going 7-5 ATS in 2006 and 8-3 ATS in 2007.

Florida Atlantic’s offense has been ugly so far, averaging only 15 points per game which pits them almost dead last in college football. The Trojan defense isn’t anything special though, giving up 331 yards per game so maybe the Owls can get something going tonight. The team does do a good job of covering the odds though, winning money for backers 16 out of 25 times since the start of the 2006 season.

Since joining the Division I ranks, Troy has beaten Florida Atlantic two out of three times, and all three contests have flown over the total. Last year the Owls came out on top 38-32 despite Troy coming in favored by more than two touchdowns.

Predicted Score: Troy 27, Florida Atlantic 24
