Tulsa 2009 NCAA Football Predictions

Written July 6, 2009 by InfoPlays

2009 Tulsa Football PredictionsTulsa set a school record last year for wins in a season as they finished with an 11-3 mark. This was the first time in school history that the Tulsa Golden Hurricane posted back-to-back double-digit win seasons. To make it three in a row this season might be too much to ask considering they have to break in a new quarterback. What Tulsa has going for them is that they have home meetings with Houston and East Carolina, the two C-USA teams that beat them last season. Offense: The Golden Hurricane led the nation in total offense the past two seasons, setting school records with 7,978 total yards for a 569.9 yards/game average last year. Tulsa returns six starters on offense, including a trio of wide receivers in Damaris Johnson, Trae Johnson and Slick Shelley. Breaking in a new quarterback is clearly the team’s biggest concern. Jacob Bower, G.J. Kinne and Shavodrick Beaver will be trying to fill David Johnson’s shoes. Bower saw limited action last season and attempted 15 passes. Coach Todd Graham has stated that nobody emerged in the spring drills to take the starting job, so all three will compete into the fall.

The trio of receivers returning combined for 116 catches and 21 touchdowns for the GMAC Bowl champions. Damaris Johnson led the club with 53 grabs for 743 yards and 10 touchdowns, while Trae Johnson set freshman school records with 1,088 receiving yards and 13 scores to earn Freshman All-America honors in 2007. Charles Clay brings experience at running back. He has compiled 1,488 receiving yards and 449 rushing yards in his career here. Tulsa scored a school-record 661 points last season, averaging 47.2 points/game which ranked second in the country.

Defense: After being a weak spot in big games last season, Tulsa needs its defense to step up in a big way. The Hurricane was 84th nationally in turnover ratio with just 9 interceptions a year ago. Eight starters return, led by linebacker Mike Bryan as the team leader in tackles with 119 in his first year as a starter. Linebacker Tanner Antle showed flashes of brilliance last season, but the team needs him to be more consistent.

Second-team All-C-USA pick in safety James Lockett is back this season after leading the team with 16.5 tackles for loss last year. Tulsa will count on senior free safety Charles Davis to head the pass defense, which always gets tested in this conference. Cornerback Kenny D. Sims and nose guard Wilson Garrison each earned honorable mention All-C-USA recognition last season and both are back. Sims had eight pass break-ups, while Garrison had 53 stops.
