Tulsa at Oklahoma Football Odds & Predictions
Written September 16, 2009 by Rock Henderson
Life without Sam Bradford continues for a second week in a row when the Oklahoma Sooners host the explosive offense of the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. The loss of the Heisman QB was evident in the second half against BYU as redshirt freshman QB Landry Jones struggled to move the ball and #20 BYU upset the #3 Sooners. Tulsa has started the season with two lopsided wins against Tulane and New Mexico. They will provide a formidable challenge for Oklahoma, but have lost 9 of the last 10 against the Sooners by an average of 36 points! Oklahoma is listed as a 16.5 point favorite over Tulsa according to the college football point spreads this week, and the over/under is set for 58 points.
Head coach Todd Graham had no hesitation about opening the 2009 season on the road for three straight weeks. Texas transfer G.J. Kinne has Tulsa fans excited at the prospect of making a return trip to the Conference USA title game. The sophomore quarterback has thrown for 521 yards and 5 touchdowns in his first two collegiate games. Kinne has plenty of speed around him and relies heavily on WR Damaris Johnson to make big plays after the catch. Johnson caught 53 passes for 10 touchdowns a season ago and is off to another nice start this year. The defensive side of the ball returns 8 starters from an 11-3 team a year ago. The Golden Hurricane will have to go turnover free on Saturday if they want to have any chance of pulling the upset against the #12 Sooners. They have the offense to score points on any defense in the nation, but if they give Oklahoma a short field with multiple turnovers the game will get out of hand quickly. Bob Stoops could not have imagined the 2009 season starting the way it did for his Sooners. Ranked #3 in the preseason after a runner-up finish in 08’, returning All-Americans Sam Bradford and TE Jermaine Gresham went down with injuries after deciding not to enter the NFL draft even though they were sure 1st round picks. Bradford’s replacement, freshman QB Landry Jones, looked much more comfortable in his first full game as a starter against Idaho State. The gunslinger from New Mexico threw for 286 yards and three touchdowns as the Sooners rolled to their 25th straight home victory. Granted the opponent was an FCS member, but Jones showcased that he is capable of filling in for Bradford on an interim basis. Stoops re-structured the offensive line that was bullied up front by BYU and committed 9 penalties in the opener. They played better as a unit against Idaho State, but this was against a team that had 37 total yards against Arizona State.
The last game between these two saw 83 points scored and almost 1000 yards of total offense. Oklahoma ran away with the win 62-21. Tulsa is 0-10 against Big 12 opponents and has lost their last 15 road games versus BCS teams. The line is set at 16.5 points favoring the Sooners. While it is still uncertain what the Sooner freshman quarterback is truly capable of, Oklahoma’s defense should be able to slow down Tulsa’s offense enough to cover the number, just barely.
Final Score Prediction: Oklahoma 38, Tulsa 21
