Twins vs Royals Picks & Predictions

Written June 30, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz

twins-royals-preview-063009Minnesota is an even 39-39 on the season. They have played .500 ball over the past 10 games going 5-5. The Twins are a team that always maximizes their potential considering the low payroll they have to work with. In terms of big names, they have arguably the best one two combo in the game with Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau. Mauer is the best catcher in baseball period, he is hitting .386 with 14 homers and 43 RBIs. Morneau, a former MVP first baseman is hitting .309 from the dish with 18 homers and 63 RBIs. You add Jason Kubel to the mix who is having a break through year with 13 homers and 42 RBIs while hitting .313 on the season. Denard Span and Michael Cuddyer have been decent as well. On the mound tonight will be Scott Baker who is much better then his numbers show. He is 5-6 with a 5.17 ERA on the season. His home/away and day/night numbers are all within reason. However, this is the reason why Baker will pitch his best game of the year tonight. In five June starts, he is 3-0 with a 3.41 ERA. Although he got hit hard in his one start against Kansas City this year, last season he went 2-0 in three starts with a 2.18 ERA verse the Royals. Look for Baker as I stated above to dominate tonight as the Twinkies look bound for a big time victory tonight. Four runs will be enough here.  Tuesday’s MLB lines show the Twins -142 against the Royals and an Over/Under set at 9 runs.

The Royals are 33-42 on the season. After their hot start which made people think they might be in it this year, Kansas City has came back down to earth. Their hitting as a team is a joke. They do not have one every day player that is hitting .300 or better. Catcher Miguel Olivo is leading the team with 12 home runs, he has also added 32 RBIs. Billy Butler is probably their best player. He has totaled seven homers and 34 RBIs while hitting .287 from the plate. David Dejesus and Jose Guillen have both been utter disappointments this season. The lack of power on this team shows every night. On the mound for KC will be Brian Bannister. On the year he is 5-5 with a 4.17 ERA. He is 3-2 with a 3.38 ERA at home. However, during eight night starts he is 2-3 with a 5.56 ERA. In five June starts, Bannister is 1-3 with a 4.70 ERA. He also is much better against Right handed hitters then he is lefties. Mauer and Morneau hit left handed. Uh oh, look for Bannister to get roughed up and for the Royals to drop this game tonight. Dejesus will need to have a big game for them if they are to stay close as he has not gotten on base nearly as much as he needs to.

Haimos Hot Notes: The Twins are 7-1 in their last eight games following a loss. The Royals are 7-16 in their last 23 games as an underdog. Kansas City is also 15-31 in their last 46 games overall. In the head to head area, the Royals have won six of the last eight games. Tonight, Baker will lead the way and Morneau I project to have a monster night. The Twins are a tailor made BEST BET.

Jordan’s Pick: Minnesota Twins -142 (BEST BET)

WHAMMY! The winning streak has now reached 12 games in a row. We doubled up on the Red Sox last night hitting the BEST BET money line and the run line as well. At this rate Ill be looking to purchase a new Ferrari instead of a Mercedes. Lets keep this fire hot streak going tonight. Comments always welcome.
