UAB at Tennessee

This Saturday the Tennessee Volunteers will look to even up their record when they host the UAB Blazers. The Volunteers come into the game on a two game losing streak, as they followed up a 48-13 loss to Oregon with a 31-17 loss against Florida last week. The Blazers will also look to move to 2-2 on the season, as they snapped a two game skid with a 34-33 win over Troy last week. If you are thinking about betting on the game this weekend, the current odds have the Volunteers listed asĀ  14-point favorites at home.

UAB (1-2): The Blazers pulled off a shocking come from behind win last Saturday, as they trailed 23-0 midway through the second quarter, and were still down 33-20 with just under 10 minutes to play in the fourth quarter. The Blazers answered right away with a touchdown to pull within six, and then scored on a 44 yard touchdown pass as time expired to take home the 1-point victory. Not a bad way to get your first win of the season.

The Blazers got a big game out of quarterback Bryan Ellis, who threw for 360 yards and three touchdowns, including the final two scores of the game. The star of the game however was Jackie Williams, who caught both of Ellis’ fourth quarter touchdown passes, and also had a 4 yard touchdown run. Williams finished the game with 6 catches for 114 yards. The Blazers will need another big game from Ellis and Williams this week, if they plan on upsetting Tennessee on the road.

Tennessee (1-2): The Volunteers opened the season with 50-0 win against Tennessee-Martin, but both sides of the ball have been awful the past two games. A lot of that is because the Volunteers played two of the best teams in the country the past two weeks. Last week against Florida, Tennessee trailed 7-3 going at halftime, but the defense allowed 24 second half points, while the offense only manged to score 14.

Quarterback Matt Simms had his best day throwing the football, as he threw for a season best 259 yards and two touchdowns, but also had two interceptions in the loss. Simms is now even on the season with three touchdowns and three interceptions. What really hurt Tennessee was their inability to run the football, as they had just 29 yards on the ground. I expect much better numbers from the Volunteers offense this week, as UAB gave up 566 yards of total offense to Troy last week.

Looking at the Odds: I think you have to take Tennessee -14 in this game, as I think they would come in much heavier favorites had they not had to play Oregon and Florida the last two weeks. I mean we are talking about a pretty good SEC school against a team out of Conference USA. The Volunteers are 7-3 ATS vs. a team with a losing record, and are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 vs. CUSA. My final score prediction is Tennessee 33, UAB 17.
