UFC 87 Fight Predictions

Written August 5, 2008 by Jason Lowry

This weekend the UFC is coming at us with UFC 87 Seek and Destroy live August 9th from the Target Center in Minnesota. Though the fight card is full of great fights, we are going to take some extra time to just pick apart two of the biggest fights of the night. First off we are going to breakdown the main event between UFC Welterweight Champion Geores St-Pierre and number one contender Jon Fitch, and the much sought after fight between Brock Lesnar and Heath Herring. Jason Lowry is going to take a look at both fighters odds and breakdown the fight before he gives you his prediction on who wins.

Current odds for St-Pierre vs. Fitch at BetUS.com
St Pierre -350
Fitch +250

This fight should be one of the most exciting fights of the nights, as you get two well rounded athletes going at each other for the Welterweight Championship. St-Pierre comes in as the champion to a fight for the first time, and his first title defense comes up against non other than maybe the most underrated fighter at 170. St-Pierre’s well rounded skills combined with one of the hardest work ethics in the business, make for one series fighter. St- Pierre has fought some of the best competition thrown at him including wins over Matt Hughes twice, B.J. Penn, Sean Sherk, and most recently Matt Serra. Fitch will be the guy trying to spoil the party, as he finally gets the title shot he deserves after 8 straight wins to start out in the UFC. Fitch too has some great all around skills, but he is best on the ground where he can use his great wrestling ability to his strength. With wins over guys like Roan Carneiro, Diego Sanchez, and Chris Wilson in his last 3 fights, you know this guy is going to bring it in this one.

Prediction: St-Pierre -350
While we like both fighters, and we really think that Fitch is one hell of a fighter, there just doesn’t look like there is any stopping St-Pierre. We look for this title fight to go at least to the 2nd round, either way we got St-Pierre winning by TKO.

Current odds for Brock Lesnar vs. Heath Herring
Lesnar -230
Herring +180

This is what many people are calling a do or die situation for Lesnar, as he continues to make it in the MMA scene after becoming popular as a professional wrestler in the WWE. While we don’t see this being the end of Lesnar’s run if he fails to win this one, it is a very important fight in his short career. Lesnar comes in with a gigantic body that he will use to try and beat up on Herring. In his last fight Lesnar look like he was going to beat Frank Mir in his last fight, but slipped up and lost the fight by a leg lock. Herring is the more experienced fighter as he has fought some of the toughest fighters during his MMA career. In his last fight Herring was able to take a very impressive split decision win over Cheick Kongo at UFC 82.

Prediction: Herring +180
We think that Lesnar will get his shots in, but we just see him slipping up again in this one, and allowing Herring to take advantage and take home the victory. We see this fight going most of the way, and likely will go to a decision, where we see Herring winning by Unanimous decision.
