UFC 88 Liddell vs. Evans

Written August 21, 2008 by Jason Lowry

On Saturday September 6th the UFC will make its main event debut in Atlanta, as the Phillips Arena will be the host of UFC 88: Breakthrough. The event like normal has plenty of fights, but only 5 are scheduled for the main card. This time the main event is former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Chuck Liddell taking on the up and coming undefeated Rashad Evans. Though there are more fights on the main card, we are going to put all our focus on this one, as Jason Lowry takes a look at each fighter, and gives you his though on how he sees the fight ending up.

Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell (-280 at BetUS.com)
There was talk that the 38 year old fighter was done for after 2 consecutive losses to Quinton Jackson and Keith Jardine, but he quickly reminded us that he had won 7 fights previous to that, and came out with a very impressive win over Wanderlei Silva at UFC 79. Liddell has some of the best striking ability in all of the UFC, as many time it only takes one kick or punch to send his opponent to the floor. Liddell wants to get his title back, and a win over Evans would definitely get him going in the right track. Liddell is also a well rounded grappler, but we feel like if Liddell wants to win this fight he is best suited to keep this fight on his feet, as his ground game is no where near as good as his stand up.

Rashad “Sugar” Evans (+210 at BetUS.com)
Evans is comes in as the much younger and less experienced fighter in this one, but his 16-0-1 MMA record is reason enough to take this guy seriously. Evans is known for his great takedowns, and his ability to avoid being taken down. Since joining the UFC Evans has looked pretty strong, with his only non victory coming against Tito Ortiz that ended in a draw back at UFC 73. Evans most recent win came over Michael Bisping at UFC 78, where he took home the win by split decision. Evans has what it takes to beat Liddell, but its going to really come down to if Evans can take numerous shots from Liddell, and stay on his feet.

Winner: Liddell -280 at BetUS.com
We think that Liddell just has to much raw power for Evans to handle, but we don’t think this fight is going to be over once it starts. We see Liddell winning by knock out late in the 2nd round, but don’t be surprised to see Evans get a few good shots in on Liddell.
