UFC 90: Anderson Silva vs. Patrick Cote Preview & Predictions
Written October 19, 2008 by Jason Lowry

October is quite the month for UFC fans, as they are not only treated to one big event, but two big time nights of fight. After just finishing up UFC 89 overseas in England, the UFC heads back to the U.S. for UFC 90 this weekend. What a fight card they are bringing to you this weekend, as the main event involves Anderson Silva who many consider the pound for pound best fighter in the world. Silva will defend his Middleweight title against the tough Patrick Cote, who looks to remind everyone that anything is possible in the UFC, and as good as Silva looks, he’s not unbeatable. Though there are a number of good fights and fighters in action this weekend including Josh Koscheck vs. Thiago Alves, professional handicapper Jason Lowry is going bring you his preview and prediction for the title fight between Silva and Cote. Anderson Silva is currently listed as a -675 favorite at Sportsbook.com.
Anderson “The Spider” Silva (22-4)
Just watching this guy fight alone is worth the price of admission or pay per view, as Silva has provided some of the most exciting and crazy knockout performances the UFC has seen. Silva hasn’t lost a fight since 2004, and since joining the UFC he has either knocked out or submitted his opponent in the first or second round of every fight, with 6 of his 8 UFC fights ending by knockout. Silva has already racked up two impressive wins in 2008 that included a choke out of Dan Henderson at UFC 82, and most recently a knock out of James Irvin back in July. Silva has the ability to throw together some of the most creative and dangerous striking combinations that have left many of his opponents on the floor. Not only does Silva have a powerful punch, he can land a devastating kick or knee as well. Even though Silva does most of his damage in stand up, there is no question this guy has the ability to fight on the ground as well.
Patrick ” The Predator” Cote (14-4)
Cote has really earned his chance to test his skills against what many call the best fighter in the UFC, as Cote has rounded up 4 straight wins after starting 0-4 in the UFC against some of the bigger names the business has to over. Most recently Cote is coming off a split decision win over Ricardo Almeida. Cote has shown that he can not only throw a knockout blow, as he sent both Kendall Grove and Drew McFedries to the floor, but Cote has one hell of a chin, as he has never been knocked out. Both of those qualities will be put to the test this weekend, as many believe Cote will either need to find a way to get a submission in or land a huge blow that rocks Silva, and if Cote is to survive all 5 rounds he will need to able to stay on his feet after taking a number of shots from Silva. Any fighter can have his day, but Cote will need one heck of a showing if he plans on pulling off the upset and become the new UFC Middleweight Champion.
Prediction: Silva -675
We aren’t getting crazy and picking that upset this weekend, but we understand that this fight has the making of going longer than any fight Silva has had in the UFC. Though Cote’s chin might keep him around longer than others have lasted against Silva, we still think Silva finds a way to submit Cote by the end of round 3. Also we aren’t sold on the fact that Silva can’t knock Cote out, as he has already proven he can knockout guys with solid chins, such as his 2006 knockout of Chris Leben.
