UFC 94: St-Pierre vs. Penn 2 Preview & Odds

Written January 27, 2009 by Jason Lowry

St-Pierre Penn

The UFC is right back in action, as UFC 94: St-Pierre vs. Penn 2 is set to get underway Saturday January 31 from MGM Grand Garden Arena. While the fight card might not be loaded from top to bottom, the main event just might be the most anticipated rematch in UFC history. In the previous fight between George “Rush” St-Pierre and BJ “The Prodigy” Penn back in 2006 at UFC 58, St-Pierre took home the win by split decision. Other great fights include a matchup of undefeated fighters in Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida vs. Thiago Silva and a light heavyweight battle between Stepham “American Psycho” Bonnar and Jon “Bones” Jones. Finishing up the main card for UFC 94 are Karo Parisyan vs. Dong Hyun Kim and Nate Diaz vs. Clay Guida. To get you going on the upcoming UFC event, here is a quick look at the odds for the 3 top fights this weekend.

Main Event: George St-Pierre (-175) vs. BJ Penn (+135)

You can ask for a better main event than this one, as St-Pierre is the current Welterweight Champion and Penn is the current Lightweight title holder. Penn not only has a shot at revenge in this one, but could become the first fighter in UFC history to hold two belts at the same time. St-Pierre comes in with a solid 17-2 MMA record, and is an outstanding 8-2 in his last 10 UFC fights, including 4 straight coming into this fight. St-Pierre absolutely destroyed Jon Fitch back at UFC 87, and while it went to decision, St-Pierre was in complete control of the fight and won by unanimous decision. St-Pierre is a very well rounded fighter that can beat with his excellent wrestling, striking, and submission skills. Penn comes in at 13-4-1and is on a tear of his own winning his last 3 fights, including a TKO victory of Sean Sherk at UFC 84 in May of last year. Penn might be better suited to just stay at 155 an walk over the lightweight division, but you have to like the fight this guy has and wanting to continue to challenge himself. Penn just like St-Pierre is a very well rounded fighter with very few holes in his game, and its very that this one goes to a decision once again.

Lyoto Machida (-300) vs. Thiago Silva (+200)

A lot of people might not know just exactly who these two guys are, but we guarantee all the fighters at the 205 weight class are taking notice of what these guys are doing in the octagon. Both fighters come in at a perfect 13-0, and the winner will not only remain unbeaten, but will increase their chances at a title shot. Machida is a very tough fighter to figure out, as he has mastered his Karate skills and is able to confuse his opponent with unusual striking techniques. Silva is a much more simple fighter,as he loves to come right at you with agressive striking and is a force at the ground and pound. In the octagon Machida is coming off his most impressive win of his career, as he took home a unanimous decision win over the great Tito Ortiz. Silva on the other hand in 4 UFC fights hasn’t went the distance once, and has only made it past the 1st round in 1 fight. Either way this is going to be a very entertaining fight and for those of you just looking at the odds for this one, we think its going to be a lot closer than you might expect.

Stephan Bonnar (-175) vs. Jon Jones (+135)

Another undefeated fighter will be in action in this one, as Jon Jones at 7-0 has yet to lose, including his only fight in the UFC against Andre Gusmao where he won by unanimous decision back at UFC 87. Jones will easily face his toughest competition to date, as Stephan Bonnar comes in at 14-4 and has won back to back fights in the UFC with a submission win over Mike Nickels and a TKO of Eric Schafer in his most recent fight at UFC 77. Bonnar has great durability and has the ability to land some very devastating strikes. Jones brings a background of wrestling, jiu-jitsu, and muay thai and will need to bring his best game if he wants to remain with a perfect record and continue to climb the ranks of the 205 weight class.
