UNLV vs Kansas State

The No. 11 Kansas State Wildcats will look to bounce back from a 57-44 loss at Florida when they take on the UNLV Rebels this Tuesday. The Wildcats, now 9-2, shot just 27% (15-55) against the Gators, and have really been struggling with their shot lately. UNLV snapped a two game losing streak with a 72-50 win against Southern Utah on Saturday, their first win since starting the season 9-0. Our odds for this game have the Wildcats favored by 3.5-points over the Rebels.
This is going to be a very difficult challenge for the Wildcats this week, as they go up against a UNLV team that is relentless on the defensive side of the ball, as they rotate in a bunch of players and just constantly put pressure on the other team. That isn’t exactly what the Wildcats need to break out of the recent slump they are on.
Jacob Pullen leads the Wildcats in scoring, with a 16.5 average, but his numbers are down from last season. Pullen did have 19 points against the Gators last Saturday, but is still shooting just 40% from the field. Pullen isn’t the only one struggling, as the Wildcats are shooting just 43% from field as a team, and its been even worse of late, as they come in averaging just 66 points over the last four games. The Wildcats also shoot just 54.5% from the free throw line.
The reason the Wildcats have been able to win games is they also play extremely well on defense and do a good job of rebounding the basketball. Opponents are scoring just 62.1 points per game this season, and with the way this team is shooting it will be the defense that is the key against the Rebels.
The Rebels are a team you have to take seriously, as they already have wins over Wisconsin and Virginia Tech. The Rebels didn’t look good at all in their 68-62 loss to UC Santa Barbara, but if this team is making shots on the offensive end, they play such good defense that they can beat just about anybody.
Chace Stanback leads a balanced Rebels scoring attack with a 13.7 average, but has had a couple of big games against some of the better competition the Rebels have faced this season. Stanback had 25 points against Wisconsin and 17 points against Virginia Tech. If Stanback has a big game against the Wildcats, I think UNLV has a great a shot at winning this game.
The Wildcats are likely going to be favored in this game, but I really like the Rebels chances of pulling off the upset, which makes them a great play against the spread if they are getting points.
Got something to say?
