Urban Meyer’s New Contract with the Florida Gators

urban-meyer-new-contract-2009 ESPN reports that Urban Meyer recently inked a new deal with the Florida Gators that will make him the highest paid coach in the SEC, though probably not in the country. While the figures aren’t available to the public, both Pete Carroll (USC) and Charlie Weis (Notre Dame) are believed to make more per year than this new deal will pay Meyer.

The contract gives Meyer an extension through the 2014 season and has built-in incentives that could easily make him the highest paid coach in the country, especially considering how well the Gators’ program looks. Looking forward to this season, the Gators are the favorite to win the BCS Championship again at 2 to 1 odds (the next closest team is Texas at 4 to 1).

The university wants to leave as little incentive as possible for Meyer to leave considering he has taken the Gators to incredible heights in his first four seasons, including a pair of National Championships.

This new deal will pay Meyer around $4 million per year in salary over the next six years, not counting incentives. That’s up from his previous contract, which was a 4-year $3.25 million per year contract.
