2009 US Open Betting Odds
Written by Jason Lowry
The 109th US Open is just a couple of days away, as action is set to get underway this Thursday and conclude on Sunday, but as last year reminded us the tournament could go an extra day if there is a playoff. Unlike other tournaments where the playoff is usually sudden death, those tied after 4 rounds must play an extra round of golf on the following Monday. Tiger Woods is the defending champion of the US Open, as he won his 3rd US Open last year in dramatic fashion over Rocco Mediate. Unlike the Masters, the US Open is played on a different course every year, and this year marks the return to the very difficult Bethpage Black golf course, that gave all sorts of trouble back in 2002. Tiger Woods won that event shooting a 3 under 277, but the course has been made even harder for the tournament this year, and I wouldn’t be surprised if no one finishes under par this weekend. For those of you possibly looking to do some golf betting this weekend, I have broken down the field into the favorites, guys in the middle of the road, and the long shots, plus I have added each golfers odds to win the 2009 US Open.
Favorites: Tiger Woods +125, Phil Mickelson +1000, Jim Furyk +1500, Geoff Ogilvy +2000, Paul Casey +2500, Retief Goosen +3000, and Steve Stricker +3000.
It should come to no surprise that Tiger Woods is the overall favorite to win this weekend, but every one of these golfers could come away with a win this weekend. Furyk, Goosen, and Ogilvy have all won the US Open in their careers, while Stricker, Mickelson, and Casey will be looking for their first US Open victory.
Middle of the Road: Vijay Singh +4000, Sergio Garcia +4000, Sean O’Hair +4000, Rory McIlroy +4000, Padriag Harrington +4000, David Toms +4000, Henrik Stenson +4000, Camilo Villegas +4000, Ernie Els +5000, Ian Poulter +5000, Kenny Perry +5000, and Luke Donald +5000.
There are a number of golfers here that could find there way to the top of the leaderboard, including the big names of Harrington and Garcia.who both finished in the top 10 at Bethpage back in 2002. Els is a two time winner of the US Open, but hasn’t won the major since 1997. The youngster McIlroy could really make this an exciting weekend if he comes out and plays well, but I think the guys to keep an eye on are Perry, Donald, and O’Hair.
Long Shots: Mike Weir +6000, Hunter Mahan +6000, Nick Watney +6000, Rory Sabbatini +6000, Anthony Kim +6000, Stewart Cink +6000, Tim Clark +6000, Zach Johnson +6000, Angel Cabrera +7500, Lee Westwood +8000, Robert Allenby +8000, Rocco Mediate +10000, Boo Weekley +10000, Chad Campbell +10000, Justin Leonard +10000, Adam Scott +10000, Justin Rose +10000, Stephen Ames +10000, Stewart Appleby +10000, and KJ Choi +10000.
Mediate showed us last year that anything can happen, and it doesn’t matter what your odds are going into the tournament. There are a bunch of big names in this group, including the 2009 Masters Champion Cabrera, who just so happen to win the US Open back in 2007. With the course playing so long this year its going to be hard for guys like Clark and Johnson to come away with a victory, but don’t be surprised if they shock everyone and are in the thick of things come the weekend. Another couple guys I think that are worth keeping an eye on are Allenby, Leonard, and Choi.
