Washington vs USC Football Odds
Written September 18, 2009 by Rock Henderson
The USC Trojans are inarguably one of the top football programs in the nation. This hasn’t stopped the Trojans from having let down games the last two years that have kept them out of the national title picture. In 2007 it was a loss to cross town rival UCLA that dashed their title hopes. Last year, after taking out Ohio State rather easily at home, USC traveled to Corvallis, OR and fell to the Oregon State Beavers in a game they were favored by 35 points. Coach Pete Carroll has plenty of past experience to draw on in order to avoid this scenario yet again in 09’. After an emotional 18-15 come from behind victory in front of 107,000 fans at Ohio State, Carroll’s squad will make the trip up North to clash with conference foe the Washington Huskies. Looking at the college football lines over the past few days, USC opened as a three touchdown favorite, but the public favors Washington with the points and the line currently sits at USC -20.
Former USC offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian is fully aware that it will take some time to turnaround a team that did not win a game in 2008, but by the looks of it the Huskies are heading in the right direction quickly. QB Jake Locker has thrived in Sarkisian’s offensive system throwing for 574 yards and five touchdowns in two games. Washington snapped the nation’s longest losing streak with a 42-23 thumping of the Idaho Vandals. The Huskies opened the year against a top 10 team in the LSU Tigers and gave them all they could handle, eventually losing the game 31-23. Both Sarkisian and defensive coordinator Nick Holt were integral in the recent Trojan success and their knowledge of the program could assist in the preparation for this game. Sarkisian is trying to down play the importance of the game and treat it like any other, but it won’t be easy come game time when he looks across the field and Pete Carroll is staring back. The Husky defense will have to improve drastically from weeks 1 and 2 if it wants to have any aspirations of pulling off the huge upset. Trojan QB Matt Barkely proved why he was named the starter in camp as a true freshman when the 19 year old led USC on an 86 yard game winning drive that was capped off by a 2 yard touchdown run by RB Stafon Johnson with just over a minute left to stun Ohio State. Barkley injured his shoulder in the 3rd quarter against the Buckeyes and backup Aaron Corp has been named the starter for the Washington game. Corp was listed on the top of the depth chart after the spring game. The 3rd year QB suffered an injury and lost the job to Barkley who never relinquished it. RB Joe McKnight has finally shown signs of the electrifying back he was assured to be coming out of high school. The junior scat back has ran for 205 yards and two scores.
Washington is heading in the right direction under Sarkisian and have a young team with talent. The Huskies will be outclassed in this match-up, but I believe the number was set too high as USC has proved that they will overlook opponents after big wins.
