Vanderbilt at Mississippi Odds

Written by

This Saturday the Mississippi Rebels will host the Vanderbilt Commodores in a SEC showdown. The Rebels avenged a embarrassing loss in the first week of the season against Jacksonville State with a nice 27-13 win on the road over Tulane last week. The Commodores were unable to bounce back from a tough loss against Northwestern, as they fell 27-3 to LSU at home. If you are interested in making a bet on this game, the current college football odds have the Rebels come in 12-point favorites over the Commodores.

The Commodores could get nothing going against LSU last Saturday, as they only had a 135 yards of total offense. Quarterback Jordan Jefferson was just 8 of 20 for 70 yards with an interception. Warren Norman did the most damage for the Commodores, as he finished with 68 yards on eight carries. The Commodores ended the game with just eight first downs, as they were a miserable 2 of 13 on third down conversions.

Hard to imagine that the Commodores are going to have much more success in their first road game of the season. Last year Vanderbilt hosted Mississippi and wound up losing the game 23-7, but the Rebels have had a lot of trouble stopping teams in the first two games of the season.

The Rebels avoided a terrible start to the season with a win on the road against Tulane. Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli played a big role in the Rebels win, as he ended up throwing for 281 yards and a touchdown, and did some damage on the ground with a 1-yard touchdown run.

Running back Brandon Bolden also had a big game for Mississippi, as he totaled 32 yards on the ground, including a nice 16 yard touchdown run, and also caught four passes for 36 yards. Senior wide out Markeith Summers led the Rebels with five catches for 165 yards and a touchdown.

The Rebels defense was lucky the offense came to play, as they allowed Tulane to move the chains throughout the game, and only outgained them by 62 yards. The defense did create two turnovers, and will likely have the chance to create a few more this weekend.

Looking at the Odds: Even though I think Vanderbilt is going to haveĀ  a little more success on the offensive side of the ball in this game, I don’t think it will be enough to win or cover the spread. My money is definitely on the Rebels to cover the 12-point spread. I look for Masoli to be the key player in this game, as I believe he could torch the Commodores with both is arm and his feet. My final score prediction is Mississippi 33, Vanderbilt 17.
