Vanderbilt vs Murray State

4-seed Vanderbilt heads out to San Jose, California to take on 13-seed Murray State in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament Thursday. If you are looking to bet this game, then check out the odds where you will find Vanderbilt -3 over Murray State. Most of the time in a 4 vs. 13 match-up you will find the lower seed as a much bigger favorite, but not in this game.

Vanderbilt earned their 4-seed by going 24-8 this season and 12-4 in SEC play, finishing in second place on the East side of the conference. It is the second time in the last three years that the Commodores have been given the fourth seed. The last time came in 2008, when they were upset in the opening round by 13-seed Siena. Their final game of the season was a 10-point loss to Mississippi State in the SEC Tournament semis, and they were also beaten by South Carolina in their regular-season finale. So this team enters with little momentum, and that could be a big reason why they are such a small favorite here. But the Commodores are not short on talent, led by Jermaine Beal (14.7 PPG), Jeffery Taylor (13.4) and A.J. Ogilvy (13.4). This trio will be a very tough match-up for Murray State to defend.

The Murray State Racers posted a 30-win season, going 30-4 overall and 17-1 in the Ohio Valley to take down the regular season championship. The Racers proceeded to win the OVC Tournament as well, ending in a 62-51 victory over Morehead State in the championship game. This is one of the hottest teams in the country, winning 21 of their past 22 games overall. They are a very rare team that shoots 50% from the field and holds their opponents to less than 40% shooting. Teams that have done this in year’s past entering the tournament have had tremendous success in the Big Dance, but not many are giving the Racers a shot to go far. Murray State was the only conference champion in the country to lead its league in scoring offense and defense. Get this, Murray State has five players averaging between 10.3 PPG and 10.6 PPG and they have a sixth player averaging 9.5 PPG. So this team is the definition of balance, and they could make it to the Sweet 16 if they beat Vandy because they’d have another winnable game in the Round of 32 against either Butler or UTEP.
