2009 Verizon Heritage Predictions
Written by Jason Lowry
It was a great weekend for golf fans last week at the Masters, as you couldn’t ask for a better finish to one of the biggest tournaments of the season. The key for the golfers who plan on playing this week at the Verizon Heritage is getting their mind in the right place after all the emotions that go along with playing at Augusta and trying to win the first major of the season. Many golfers don’t even bother playing the following week, including the top 2 players in the world in Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. There are still a bunch of really good golfers playing this week, including two time defending champion Boo Weekley, who will look to not only make it 3 straight, but snap out of the funk he has started the season in. Normally the golfers who hit it long off the tee have the advantage, but thats not really the case this week at Harbour Town. This course not only has tight winding fairways, but some of the smallest greens the Tour will see all season long, so whoever wins this weekend will need great accuracy off the tee and in the fairway and will need to be good at scrambling, as golfers only hit the green in regulation 54% of the time last year at Harbour Town. To help you get going on the tournament this weekend, here are my 3 favorites to win this weekend.
Jim Furyk +1200 to win: It looked as though Furyk was going to be a big threat in the final round of the Masters, as he was 8 under after 3 round and right in the thick of things going into Sunday, but a disappointing final round of 73 kept Furyk from winning a green jacket. Either way finishing tied for 10 at the Masters is nothing to get to upset about, and this week he heads to a course that fits his game well, as Furyk is one of the more accurate drivers on tour and is great around the greens in scrambling situations. His solid play landed him a 4th place finish here at Harbour Town a year ago. I really like what Furyk brings to the table this week, and it would come to no surprise if he grabs his first win of the season.
Boo Weekley +3000 to win: There is no question that Weekley is the man to beat this week, as he has tore apart this course the last two years shooting 7 rounds under par, including rounds of 64 and 65 on Friday and Saturday of last year to put the tournament out of reach. The reason I am not completely sold on Weekley to go for the 3-peat this weekend, is he has really struggled to play well of late, finishing outside of the top 50 in each of his last 5 starts. If there is anything that can get Weekley’s game back on track it has to be a trip to Harbour Town.
Tim Clark +3000 to win: Clark threatened to become the first player to ever win the par 3 contest and the Masters in the same year, but came up short finishing tied for 13th. Clark will need that accuracy from the fairways this week, as he tried to tackle the short greens of Harbour Town. Clark has had success here before, as he finished tied for 7th in 2007. Clark also does many of things needed to do well here at Harbour Town, as he ranks in the top 20 in driving accuracy, greens in regulation, and scrambling.
