Vijay Singh Odds to Win the Masters

Written April 7, 2009 by Jason Lowry

Singh MastersIt could be a short lived first major of the season for one of the best golfers to ever play the game, as Vijay Singh just doesn’t look like the golfer who finished 2008 as the FedEx Cup Champion. With the way Singh played last year it looked as though the 46-year-old was going to be playing real competitive golf all the way into his 50’s, but a bad knee and back just might be to much to over come this season. Singh does hold the record for most wins after the age of 40 with 22, but how many more he can add to that total is still yet to be determined.

If there is one event that could possibly bring some youthful energy into the body of Singh, it could very well be the Masters, where Singh has won before (2000), and has finished in the top 10 5 times in the last 7 years, but those two finishes outside the top ten have came in the last two years. But don’t get the wrong idea, as Singh finished tied for 13th in 2007 and 14th in 2008, so it’s not as though he isn’t playing respectable golf here at Augusta. Singh has had a pretty nice run at major championships, with 3 wins and 22 top 10 finishes, but he did fail to make the cut at both the British Open and PGA Championship last year. Singh did respond late in 2008 with wins at the Barclays and the Deutsche Bank Championship to give him the FedEx Cup Title.  Bet the Masters at Sportsbook.com

For a guy that is known for his relentless practicing, Singh has not been able to follow form in the 2009 season, as Singh is still trying to get his surgically repaired knee back to full health. With a bum knee and no where near the practice time this guy is use to, its been a real rough start to the 2009 season, as Singh’s best finish is a tie for 27th at the Mercedes-Benz Championship in his first start of the season. Since then its been pretty downhill, as Singh failed to make the cut in 3 of his next 5 starts, including last week at the Shell Houston Open where he opened with a 73 and then followed it up with a 75 on Friday. Even with the hurt knee Singh is still putting up some pretty good numbers off the tee, as he ranks 36th in total driving and 46th in greens in regulation, but his putting is no where near where it needs to be, as he ranks 176th in putting average. With the poor putting comes few birdies, and Singh is 108th in birdies per round, at 3.37. Bet Singh +6000 to Win the Masters at Sportsbook.com

So a lot will have to go right for Singh to win this weekend, and if you want my opinion, I don’t think there is much of a chance that this guy even makes it to the weekend the way he has been playing so far this season. I do believe that we have not seen the end to Singh, as I fully expect him to be back in form once his knee recovers.
