Vijay Singh’s Odds to Win the 2008 Masters
With the first of 4 majors ready to get going this week, we figured we would take a look at one of golf’s better performers, in Vijay Singh. The Masters is set to get underway Thursday April 10 at Augusta National in Augusta, Georgia. After 4 physically and mentally demanding days, there will just be one man standing on the 18th green holding the trophy, and receiving the green jacket from last years winner Zach Johnson (as long as he doesn’t win again). While picking the winner before play even starts can be tough, we are going to break down of the favorites heading into this weekend. Vijay currently comes in with the 3rd best odds to win the tournament, and is considered one of the few golfers that can hang with Tiger Woods. Here is a breakdown on why we think Vijay could take home the victory, and why he might struggle this year at Augusta.

Why He Will Win:
Minus Tiger Woods, Vijay just might be the hottest player coming into the tournament this weekend. He heads into the Masters coming off three straight top 5 finishes, with a 2nd place finish at the CA Championship and a 3rd place finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Singh is well known for his hard work ethic, and has most likely spent the last 2 weeks preparing himself for the grueling challenge that awaits him at the Masters. Sing has been pretty solid off the tee this year, and has been even better when it comes to greens in regulation, where he currently has the 5th best percentage on tour at 72%. Augusta National is the 2nd longest course in major tournament play, and demands some big drives on certain holes if you want a decent iron shot for a birdie attempt. It seems like Vijay is always in contention at the Masters. He actually started off very slowly at Augusta before finally taking home a green jacket in 2000. Since then he has been near the top every year, with 5 top ten finishes. Last year Singh was just a little off on his game, but still managed to come in tied for 13th. Vijay is a great pick this week, and if you are looking to pick away from Tiger, this the guy we see stealing the green jacket if anyone does.
Why He Will Lose:
There isn’t much of a secret here, as Vijay can really struggle with the putter at times. He seems to always give himself great shots at birdies, but sometimes has trouble putting the ball in the hole. He isn’t by any means a terrible putter as he has the 57th best putting average on tour so far this season. What we are afraid of is the big putts that he will have to make under pressure. These tend to get away from him, and that just won’ get the job done. Another reason that scares us is that Vijay can sometimes come into a tournament and have 3 great rounds, but has that one round that really hurts his chances of winning. For example the at the Arnold Palmer Invitational he had a huge lead coming into the weekend, but quickly saw it disappear with a bad performance on Saturday. While he still able to finish 3rd, if he just shot even he would have been the one in control on Sunday and easily could have taken home the victory. So while Vijay isn’t a bad pick this week, he has his flaws, and will have to play his best to beat a sure determined and focused Tiger Woods.
