Minnesota Vikings vs Green Bay Packers Odds
Written October 30, 2009 by Rock Henderson
Brett Favre’s return to Lambeau Field should be an emotional one as many Packer fans still view Favre as their own. Minnesota won the first meeting at home behind a vintage performance from the Hall of Fame quarterback. QB Aaron Rodgers has been on a tear since that game and earned himself NFC player of the month honors. If the Pack lose here, it will be a long climb back to the top of the division as Minnesota will hold the tiebreaker and own a two game lead. According to our NFL betting lines, the Vikings are getting 3 points on the road with a total set at 47.
Minnesota suffered a chink in their armor at Pittsburgh last Sunday when two defensive touchdowns by the Steelers including Lamar Woodley’s long interception return for a touchdown led to the Vikings first loss. RB Adrian Peterson has been an absolute workhorse for this team, rushing for 687 yards and eight touchdowns. Widely considered the best player in the NFL, Peterson has also be utilized in the passing game as he has caught 18 balls. The emergence of WR Sidney Rice has paid dividends in the passing game. The third year player out of South Carolina has supplanted himself as the team’s top receiver by catching 33 balls for 545 yards. Head coach Brad Childress could not have expected that #4 would play at this high of a level throughout the season. Favre has thrown 12 touchdown passes against just three interceptions (two came last week) and has managed the offense flawlessly. The offense averages almost 30 ppg and the defense has been stout for the most part this year. DE Jared Allen will be happy to see the Packers offensive line again after his six sack performance last time out. This match-up for Green Bay is important for a multitude of reasons. If they win, they are tied atop the NFC North for the time being through seven games. The atmosphere will be at a fever pitch as most fans have not forgotten the Favre saga that went on a couple years ago. QB Aaron Rodgers has done his best to make the Packer faithful forget about the past as he has totaled over 1700 yards passing with 11 touchdowns and just two interceptions. One knock on A-Rod is that he holds onto the ball too long at times, which has aided in being sacked a league high 25 times. RB Ryan Grant has quietly gone about his business and ran for almost 500 yards, but has taken a backseat to the explosive passing attack. WRs Donald Driver and Greg Jennings form a nice 1-2 punch on the outside. Driver has rejuvenated his career with Rodgers at the helm while Jennings is still one of the best deep threats in the game.
Green Bay has to win this game if they want to have any chance of taking the division. Rodgers blitzed the Viking secondary for 358 yards in the Metrodome, but the numbers were inflated since they were trailing the entire game. The public has taken the 4.5 point opening line all the way down to three and I love Green Bay at that number. Play: Packers +3
