Virginia at Miami College Football Odds

Written November 5, 2009 by Hector Garza

To get an edge in betting college football check out these expert football picks.  Two years ago Miami got embarrassed at home in front of a national audience as Virginia whalloped them 48-0.  That could be a major reason why they picked their fellow ACC opponent for their homecoming game this Saturday at noon ET in Land Shark Stadium.  The Hurricanes (6-2) squeaked out a 24-17 road win last year and are hoping to continue that trend against a Cavaliers team (3-5) that looks to be headed for another losing season.  The college football odds have Miami as the 13 1/2 point favorites with an over/under at 45 1/2.

QB Jacoby Harris is coming off a huge victory against Wake Forest where he threw for 330 yards and 3 td’s.  That includes the game winner that came with 1:08 left, and Harris was named the conference player for the 3rd time this year.  He’s done a great job spreading the football around. Eight different players have each caught a td pass and three receivers have at least 20 receptions.   Javarris James tops out the RB’s with 418 yards and 4 td’s in a squad that’s averaging 120 ypg.

Against conference opponents, Miami has been terrible giving up almost 30 ppg.  Last week they got beat up for 555 yards in the win, largely in part to two missed field goals by Wake Forest,  and in their two losses to Clemson and Virginia Tech they allowed 71 points!  Because the Cavaliers don’t pose as big a threat, the Hurricanes should be able to use this game to build on their takeaways (13 total) and work on sound assignment football.  CB Brandon Harris has been a standout with 11 passes defended, and will look to shut down any big play threats.

At 2-2 the Cavaliers are hoping to stay in the ACC Coastal race, but it’s not looking likely with an offense that is averaging a measly 277.5 ypg.  Against Duke last weekend they were held to 196 yards, with QB Jameel Sewell accounting for two turnovers and throwing for only 86 yards.  On the year he’s thrown 6 td’s and 6 ints, but is almost a bigger threat on the ground as he leads the team with 100 runs.  He’s tied with RB Rashawn Jackson for the lead in rushing td’s at 5, and the ground game is averaging under 100 ypg.

Virginia has been beat up against the pass and run.  Against Georgia Tech they allowed 362 rushing yards, and last week Duke threw for 343 yards.   Despite the recent effort, pass defense has been their strength with a secondary that’s boasted 8 picks and given up 175.3 ypg.  While they lost 17-28, they did add 6 sacks to their total of 16 on the season against the Blue Devils, a number they hope to build on if they’re to have success against the Hurricanes.

With an offense that is last in the conference in scoring (21.4 ppg), the Cavaliers are going to have a tough time keeping up with Miami’s potent offense playing on the road.  Virginia is down in the overall series 2-4 and doesn’t have the talent to take advantage of their opponent’s mediocre D.  The play here is the Hurricanes by -13 1/2 as they’ll keep their ACC championship game hopes alive.  To wager on winning football picks, check out the $500 Bonus from Betus.
