Virginia vs North Carolina Betting Odds
Written October 2, 2009 by Hector Garza
This week looks to be another win for 3-1 North Carolina as they take on 0-3 Virginia in ACC play. The Tar Heels are the heavy favorite with 13 points and will be enjoying home field advantage at Chapel Hill. The series has seen 113 games played, and UNC has the edge at 56-53-4. An interesting note is that the Cavaliers have won 9 of the past 11 contests, and they’re coming off a bye week giving them more time to prepare and rest for the potential upset bid. Current NCAA football odds list North Carolina as 13 point favorites over the Cavs with an over/under listed at 42.5 points.
The Cavaliers have suffered disappointing losses this year, two weeks ago 37-34 at Southern Miss and also a season opener to an FCS opponent. They’ve averaged under 280 ypg of offense, and QB Jameel Sewell has been the primary contributor. Sewell leads the team in running with 98 yards, and has thrown for 170 ypg. He had his best outing against Southern Miss, where he threw for 312 and 2 td’s and rushed for 23 yards and 2 more td’s. He has struggled throwing more interceptions (5) than td’s (4), and he will be the focus of the UNC defense.
UNC ran for 17 yards last week, and if the Cavaliers can mimic Georgia Tech’s defensive performance, they’ve got a shot. That’s a big if for a defense that’s allowed 180.7 ypg on the ground through three contests. In their last game they were gashed for over 200 yards rushing to Southern Miss. The stop unit will need to be much improved, and the bye week should result in a better effort. A highlight they hope to build on has been the 5 turnovers they’ve been able to muster. North Carolina is averaging 27.7 ppg and almost 360 yards of offense, and they’re hoping to improve those numbers against a suspect defense. It will be interesting to see how they rebound from a horrible performance last week, gaining 154 yards total yards with three turnovers. QB T.J. Yates has completed almost 61% of his passes for 6 td’s and 5 interceptions. He’s primary targets have been Erik Highsmith and Greg Little. They’ve combined for 33 total receptions, 338 yards and 3 td’s.
UNC started the season off well, allowing under 200 ypg in their first three contests. Then along came the Yellow Jackets, who lit up the defense for 317 yards rushing alone. The Tar Heels won’t face the same potent attack this week but will need to improve to get the win. Robert Quinn leads the team with 3 sacks, and will be looking to add to his total against a Virginia team that’s allowed 13. LB Quan Sturdivant is the anchor with 30 tackles, 5 for a loss.
North Carolina has been nothing spectacular on offense, but they don’t need to be to get the win this week. The Cavaliers are 11th in the ACC in rushing defense, and their offense is just as bad, ranked last in the conference in rushing. This will be an opportunity for the Tar Heels to improve all around, especially on their 1-11 third down conversion % last week. Despite the bye week, the Cavaliers won’t have enough tricks in their bag to pull off the upset.
