Virginia Tech Football Predictions 2009

Written June 25, 2009 by InfoPlays

2009 Virginia Tech Football PredictionsIf the Hokies can keep QB Tyrod Taylor healthy this season, this is clearly the ACC’s best team. Virginia Tech return 16 of 22 starters from last year’s team that won the ACC and the Orange Bowl againt Cincinnati. With a September schedule that includes Alabama and Nebraska, the Hokies have what it takes to make a run at a National Championship this season. NCAA football odds show the Hokies listed at +2000 to win the 2010 BCS National Title.

Offense: Despite having inconsistent line play, inexperience at the skill positions and a shaky quarterback situation, Frank Beamer got the most out of his team in 2008. Now all of those problems should be in the past, as long as Tyrod Taylor avoids the ankle injuries that plagued his first two seasons. The junior quarterback has quick feet to frustrate any pass rush and he’s working on his accuracy as a passer. His 55 percent career completion percentage must go up above 60 percent this season for the Virginia Tech Hokies to become a prolific offense.

It helps that he’s surrounded by playmakers, plus a line that has more than 70 combined starts and appears to be more athletic than it has been in the past three seasons. Darren Evans rushed for more than 1,200 yards as a freshman. Behind him is electrifying freshman Ryan Williams, who wowed folks in the spring game by rolling up 151 total yards. Add Taylor’s 700-plus yards on the ground attack and this is a team that might now have to throw much to win. Three sophomore wideouts lead the receiving corps in Danny Coale, Jarrett Boykin and Dyrell Roberts, who all combined for more than 80 catches last season. Tight end Greg Boone is a do-it-all guy who gives them a boost in the red zone after making 22 grabs last year.

Defense: Tech’s starting defense could be as fast as any this program has ever fielded, with the main strength coming from a secondary that even loses Macho Harris. His corner spot has been taken by Stephan Virgil, who picked off six passes last season and become a big hitter in the mold of Brandon Flowers. Filling Virgil’s shoes on the other side is Rashad Carmichael, who beat out Cris Hill in the spring but will have to play well early to keep his job.

Senior Kam Chancellor appears to be fully ready to dominate at free safety after struggling a bit in ‘08. Second-team All-ACC end Jason Worilds and tackle John Graves, both high motor guys who have disruptive quickness, will lead the defensive line. Defensive tackle Cordarrow Thompson dropped weight and lived up to the coach’s expectations in 2008. Cody Grimm is back at outside linebacker after finishing third on the team in tackles and tying for second in sacks last season.
