Dwayne Wade 2008-09 MVP Predictions

Written January 28, 2009 by Jason Lowry

Dwayne WadeThe NBA is in full swing with the All-Star game right around the corner, and there are a number of players having outstanding seasons and are making their push at becoming the 2008-09 regular season MVP. We are going to focus are attention on the NBA’s leading scorer Dwayne Wade, who when healthy is one of the best the NBA has to offer. Wade has been injured often over the last two seasons, and last year the Heat really suffered with an unhealthy Wade, as they won just 15 games. This year Wade is back to full strength, and has the Heat back in playoff contention, as they are 23-19. Their 23 wins are good enough for 3rd place in the Southeast Division, and the 6th best record in the Eastern Conference. Here is a look at what Wade has done so far this season, and our thoughts on if Wade will walk away with the hardware.

Many believe that the reemergence of Wade came this past summer at the Olympics, but for Heat fans it really doesn’t matter what got the 5 time All-Star and former Finals MVP back to playing some of the best basketball in the league. Wade is currently averaging a league best 28.8 points a game, and is adding nearly 5 rebounds a game and 7.3 assist per contest. Wade has also been great on the defensive side of things, as he is averaging a career best 2.3 steals and 1.5 blocks a game. Wade has got some much needed help from rookies Michael Beasley and Mario Chalmers, but the Heat are only as good as Wade makes them. Wade still struggles from behind the arc, as he is shooting just 26% from the 3-point line, but the way that Wade can make things happen off the dribble make him one of the most feared players to guard in the NBA.

After so many people have taken their shots at Wade, and his inability to stay healthy, its great to see this guy playing the game at such a high level again. Wade has a great shot at taking home this award, but there are a few things we think have to happen for that to take place. Not only do we think Wade has to remain the top scorer in the league, but he needs to finish the season healthy playing in nearly every game from here on out, and the Heat have to stay towards the top of the Eastern Conference, as its hard to give the MVP to a guy who isn’t playing in the playoffs.
