Wake Forest 2009 Football Predictions

Written June 25, 2009 by InfoPlays

2009 Wake Forest Football PredictionsWake Forest will depend on its offense this year, which is rare for the Demon Deacons considering year in and year out they seem to have one of the better defenses in the country. QB Riley Skinner needs to be big, and so do running backs Josh Adams and Brandon Pendergrass behind a veteran line. The defense lost Curry, the Butkus Award winner, and Smith, the ACC’s all-time leader in interceptions, but it still has plenty of promise. They could gain a boost in confidence from a schedule that features five of the first six games at BB&T Field. That could set the tone for a fourth straight season of eight or more wins. College football odds show the Demon Deacons listed at +1400 to win the ACC Championship in 2009.

Offense: Everything starts with quarterback Riley Skinner, who goes into his senior season as the most accurate passer in ACC history. He has connected on 639 or 949 career passes at a 67.3 percent clip while throwing for 6,602 yards. He has led the Deacons to 26 victories and three straight bowl appearances. Wake hopes to be more consistent in the running game. Speedy backs Josh Adams and Brandon Pendergrass are healthy after battling injuries last year.

Adams rushed for 953 yards in 2007, but he was limited to just 402 yards on 122 carries last season while battling injuries. The running backs will operate behind a veteran offensive line that has combined for 95 career starts. Left tackle Chris DeGeare is back to reclaim is starting role after missing last season due to academics. Coach Jim Grobe said a group of young receivers was the surprise of spring drills. This should help out Skinner, who loses the prolific D.J. Boldin after he led the ACC with 81 catches last season.

Defense: The Deacons are younger and faster on defense this season, but it will be tough to account for departed stars in Aaron Curry, the fourth overall pick in the NFL Draft, and cornerback Alphonso Smith, a second round pick. Seniors Boo Robinson and John Russell will anchor the defensive front. The back seven will not only need to replace Curry and Smith, but also two other standouts in linebacker Stanley Arnoux and safety Chip Vaughn. Each went in the fourth round of the draft.

Nevertheless, Grobe says the overall team speed on defense could be the best in his tenure as Wake Forest Demon Deacons head coach. The linebacker corps will feature a deeper rotation with players who can get to the ball in a hurry. Hunter Haynes and Matt Woodlief have the most experience among these backers. Senior cornerback Brandon Ghee looks to provide the leadership for an inexperienced secondary.
