Wake Forest at Georgia Tech Football Odds
Written November 5, 2009 by Hector Garza
Betfirms has some great football picks if you’re interested in doing some college football betting. Georgia Tech (8-1) is hoping to ride their running game all the way to the ACC championship game, and with a win this week against Wake Forest, Duke will be the only team standing in their way. The Yellow Jackets are ranked 10th in the nation and will be hosting the Demon Deacons (4-5) in Atlanta, with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m. ET at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Wake Forest is hoping to end their three game losing streak, and the college football spreads show listed as 16 point underdogs with a total set for 62 1/2.
Georgia Tech is riding a 6 game winning streak and playing some great, albeit one sided, football. They’re rushing for over 300 ypg, and they’re peaking at the right time, averaging 369 ypg on the ground over their last 4 contests. QB Josh Nesbitt has been making the right decisions in the triple option attack, combining with RB Jonathan Dwyer for 21 rushing td’s and 1667 yards. The team bases their offense on the run, which accounts for Nesbitt’s poor passing stats. Currently he’s completing 47.5% of his throws for under 1200 yards and 6 td’s to 3 ints. The only real receiving threat for the team is Demaryius Thomas, who’s accounted for 823 yards on 34 receptions and 5 td’s.
It’s a good thing that the offense has been putting up an ACC best 35.2 ppg. In 5 October games, the defense has allowed 27.6 ppg and 391 ypg where they faced only 1 ranked opponent. In addition to points, they’ve only been able to force 14 sacks, which is a concern for head coach Paul Johnson. Despite their troubles, they have had a standout in DE Derrick Morgan, who currently leads the conference with 8.5 sacks and 12.5 tackles for a loss.
“This is just about the most unlucky football team I’ve ever coached”. Those words from Jim Grobe sum up the season for Wake Forest, which could easily also be 8-1. They’ve lost 4 of their 5 games by 3 points or less! Their latest loss came by 1 point to Miami at home where they missed two field goals. Their major concern is whether senior QB Riley Skinner will be able to go after suffering a concussion last week. Skinner has thrown for 65.6% for just under 2300 yards, 18 td’s and 10 int’s. Receivers Marshall Williams and Devon Brown each have at least 40 catches, and Chris Givens has 30 while the three of them combine for 13 td’s. Josh Adams leads the way with 428 yards and two td’s running the ball.
There’s no doubt the Demon Deacons can score points, but they’ll have to rely on the stop unit to effectively shut down the triple option. If the game two week ago against option-happy Navy is any indication, they’ll have a tough time. In that game they gave up 338 yards, all on the ground, in a 13-10 loss. However, against Miami they only allowed 26 yards rushing, so the potential is there to shut it down. On the year they’ve recorded 21 sacks and 12 takeaways.
Wake Forest put up 555 yards of total offense last week, but can’t seem to close out games for the win. Georgia Tech has shown they’re susceptible on defense, but their triple option has been downright abusive to opponents. If Skinner is starting, I pick the Deacons to give the Yellow Jackets a scare at home and play within the 16 points.
