Wake Forest at Stanford Spread

Written by -

This Saturday Wake Forest Demon Deacons will head Stanford Stadium to take on the No.19 ranked Stanford Cardinal. Wake Forest was able to win a shootout against Duke last week to improve to 2-0, while Standford shutout UCLA on the road 35-0 to start the season 2-0 as well. Looking at theĀ  lines for this game, the oddsmakers currently have Stanford 17-point favorites over Wake Forest at home.

The Demon Deacons have really looked good on offense after two games, as they are coming off an impressive 54-48 win at Duke, where backup quarterback Tanner Price just might have earned himself the starting job, as Price threw for 190 yards and three touchdowns on 12 of 19 passing, and played the entire second half after splitting time in the first half.

Starting quarterback Ted Stachitas was unable to complete a pass on four attempts, but did finish the game with a team best 77 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground. Price was also a factor on the ground, as he finished with 56 yards rushing and another touchdown. Wide out Marshall Williams caught two passes for two touchdowns and also had a 81 yard touchdown pass in the win over Duke. It will be interesting to see how much offense the Demon Deacons can create against a good Standford defense.

Stanford looks like they are for real this season, as I did not see them dominating UCLA the way they did last week. Quarterback Andrew Luck had a nice day throwing the football, as he finished with 151 yards and two touchdowns, and was also a factor on the ground with seven carries for 63 yards.

Sophomore Stepfan Taylor led the Cardinal with 81 yards on 20 carries, as Stanford ended up with 211 rushing yards on the day. While the offense played well, it was the defense that really impressed me last week. Stanford created four turnovers and really stepped when it mattered, as the Bruins were just 1 for 9 on third down conversions. The defense will have to be at its best again this week, if the Cardinal want to avoid a big let down at home.

Looking at the Odds: These two teams played last year at Wake Forest, and the Demon Deacons came out on top 24-17. While I don’t think Wake Forest is going to be able to win this weekend, I think they cover the 17-point spread. The Demon Deacons are 23-9 ATS vs. a team with a winning record. I believe Wake Forest does just enough on offense to cover the spread. My final score prediction is Wake Forest 20, Stanford 34.
