Key Losses
Without doubt, the most significant loss is that of Isiah Thomas to the NBA. Thomas benefited from the absence of injured point guard Abdul Gaddy and recorded 27 points and 13 assists in January at California. Four days later, the Huskies were in first place in the Pac-10 after the 85-68 victory over Arizona. In February, Thomas sank six three-pointers in a 32-point demolition of Cal. Thomas was voted the most outstanding player in the Pac-10 Tournament. He also hit the winning shot when Washington beat Arizona at the overtime buzzer in the Pac-10 Tournament final, part of a 28 point haul with seven assists in that game. When the Huskies lost 86-83 to North Carolina in the third round of the NCAA Tournament, Thomas announced he was declaring for the NBA draft.
Further departures are wing Justin Holiday (10.5 ppg, 5.2 rpg), guard Venoy Overton (5.2 ppg) and forward Matthew Bryan-Amaning (15.3 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 1.5 bpg).

2011-12 Preview
Last season, the Huskies led the Pac-10 in scoring with a high-octane 83.1 points per game.
They eventually finished third in the Pac-10 behind Arizona and UCLA, never quite managing to catch up after a heartbreaking February loss to Arizona when Derrick Williams blocked Darnell Gant’s shot just before the buzzer.
The young Huskies have stacks of potential but, having lost Thomas, will need strong leadership if they are to challenge for the Pac-12 title.
The Huskies will be looking for more from 7-0, 260-pound junior center Aziz N’Diaye (4.6 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 1.1 bpg), a rebounder and shot blocker who struggled a little last season.
While the interior is largely raw talent, the Huskies have a potential star on the perimeter in 6-6 sophomore Terrence Ross (8.0 ppg, 2.8 rpg). He’s already a strong shooter with tremendous athletic ability and could be one of the season’s big improvers.
In C.J. Wilcox (8.1 ppg, 2.1 rpg, .400 3PT) and Scott Suggs (7.4 ppg, 1.9 rpg, .450 3PT), the Huskies have a pair of useful long-range shooters. Suggs finished third in Pac-10 three-point shooting, while Wilcox hit 67 threes at a 40.1 percent rate, the seventh highest percentage in the league.
Between Gaddy and Wroten, the Huskies should be aiming to minimize the loss of Thomas. Abdul Gaddy started the season strongly before he met with injury and will be looking forward to playing alongside strong, confident guard, Tony Wroten. At 205 pounds, Wroten is a much bigger physical specimen than Thomas, a tall lefty who has the physical power to cut inside and create shooting opportunities for his colleagues.
Another option at the point for the Huskies will be versatile 6-2 freshman Hikeem Stewart, a good shooter, ball handler and defender.
6-8 senior forward Darnell Gant (5.2 ppg, 3.8 rpg) improved his rebounding last year and displayed an improved outside shot, averaging 35.6 percent from three-point territory.
Another post option with perimeter ability is Martin Breunig, a 6-8 freshman who has good strength and skills around the basket and fine athleticism. 6-10 freshman Jernard Jarreau (13.0 ppg, 8.0 rpg) entered high school at about 6-3 and still has useful guard skills in his game.
After red-shirting last season due to knee surgery, 6-7 freshman Desmond Simmons could be the Huskies’ second best rebounder behind N’Diaye and he should get the chance to prove it this season. In July, Washington brought in Shawn Kemp, Jr. (12.0 ppg, 8.0 rpg), the 6-9, 265-pound son of the Seattle SuperSonics legend. He has the potential to become a factor inside with his strength and rebounding ability as well as fine athleticism for his size.
