2011 Washington Redskins Schedule
Written by Jack Jones
The Washington Redskins really struggled in head coach Mike Shanahan’s first year on the job. He had conflicts with players like Albert Haynesworth and this team was never really able to get on track. The Redskins finished at 6-10 for the season and really need work on both sides of the ball. Still, Washington wasn’t far from having a winning year as six of their ten losses all came by four points or less.
The Redskins must figure out what they are going to do at quarterback and continue adding pieces to the puzzle that fit Shanahan’s mold. This team still has a lot of talent as a whole, but they need to add weapons on offense to become more explosive. Defensively, they need to add pass rushers after finishing 31st in the league against the pass (261.7) and 31st in yards allowed (389.2). It may take at least one more year before this team is ready to contend in the NFC East.
I’m going to go over Washington’s schedule for the 2011-12 season to try and come up with a prediction on their final record. The Redskins won their first two division games last season, but went on to lose four straight against NFC East foes to close out the year. To have any chance of contending, they must play better in their six division games. That won’t be easy as the New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys are all expected to be playoff contenders. I don’t see the Redskins finishing any better than 2-4 in the NFC East.
Where the Redskins can make up some ground this year is when they take on all four NFC West teams. Washington will be a favorite in their home meetings with the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers and will need to take advantage of those two games. Stealing a road win or two out west against the Seattle Seahawks or St. Louis Rams would also be beneficial. I’m expecting them to finish with at least a 3-1 record against this division.
While the Redskins are likely to be favored in most of their games against the NFC West, they are probably going to be an underdog in every game versus the AFC East. That’s because their road games come against the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills which are the two worst teams in that division, but they’ll still be favored at home. Washington will be catching points in their home meetings with the New York Jets and New England Patriots. I believe the best they will do is 1-3 against AFC East this season.
Rounding out their schedule will be games against the two fourth-place teams in the NFC North and NFC South. That means the Redskins will hook up with the Panthers in Carolina before hosting the Minnesota Vikings. I do believe they will be favored in both of those games and should go 2-0. After going through their entire schedule, my prediction is that Washington will finish 8-8 for the 2011-12 season.
