Washington State at Oregon Betting Odds

Written October 2, 2009 by Black Widow

Washington State travels to Oregon to take on a hot Ducks’ team for Week 5 college football. The Cougars do have a win already this season, but they’ll have their hands full with an Oregon team that just beat Cal 42-3 last week. NCAA football odds are now posted and they have installed Oregon as a 35-point favorite over Washington State with a Total Set of 55 points.

Since losing to Boise State 8-19 in Week 1, the Oregon Ducks have reeled off three consecutive victories including back-to-back wins over ranked opponents. The Ducks beat then No. 18 Utah 31-24 two weeks ago and then trounced No. 6 Cal 42-3 last week. QB Jeremiah got off to a slow start, including a 4-for-16 performance against Utah for only 95 yards and an interception. Fortunately, the defense has his back in that one. But he came back with a 21-of-25 passing effort against Cal for 253 yards and three touchdowns. Ed Dickson made a name for himself against the Golden Bears, catching 11 balls from Masoli for 148 yards and three touchdowns. It’s the Oregon defense that has been most impressive, forcing 10 turnovers and holding Cal to just 207 total yards last week. They limited Heisman Trophy candidate, Jahvid Best, to just 55 yards rushing.

Washington State did earn a big win over SMU a couple weeks back, but the Cougars are just 1-3 on the season. WSU should get a lot of credit for the way they fought against USC in a losing effort. Despite getting beat 27-6, the Cougars trailed 20-0 after one period so they played the Trojans to a 7-6 game the rest of the way. Washington State hasn’t gotten the job done offensively, putting up just 314.3 yards/game and committing 13 turnovers. Head coach Paul Wulff has seen enough of senior QB Kevin Lopina and sophomore QB Marshall Lobbestael, so he has named freshman Jeff Tuel the new starter this week. He’s hoping Tuel can spark this offense, and he’ll be the first freshman QB to start for Washington State since Drew Bledsoe way back in 1990. He played admirably after replacing Lobbastael last week, completing 14-of-22 passes for 130 yards against the Trojans. He also showed his versatility by rushing nine times for 34 yards, and Wulff likes his mobility because the offensive line is poor to say the least.
