Week 1 NFL Odds

The NFL season kicks off this Thursday with a performance by the Blackeyed Peas and a clash between the Tennessee Titans and Pittsburgh Steelers. The song “Boom Boom Pow” should fit nicely in this game as the collisions should be violent. The line opened up at -5 for the Steelers and currently sits at -6.
Two of the more surprising teams of 2008 will open up against each other Sunday afternoon. The Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons will not sneak up on any team this season as expectations are much higher. The game takes place in the Georgia Dome and the Falcons are favored by 4 points.
The Baltimore Ravens will host the Kansas City Chiefs in one of the more lopsided lines of the weekend. KC is going through a transformation with new Head Coach Todd Haley and QB Matt Cassell. QB Joe Flacco hopes to avoid the Sophomore Slump after leading the Ravens to the AFC Championship game last year. The line is set at 12.5 for the Ravens.
In one of the more intriguing match ups of Week 1, the Philadelphia Eagles travel to North Carolina to take on the Panthers. Both teams made the playoffs in 2008 and the Eagles were one game away from making it an all Pennsylvania Super Bowl. The line was set as a pick em’ initially but the public favors the Eagles and they are favored by 1.5.
We go from one of the best games on paper this Sunday to one of the worst. The Denver Broncos and new Head Coach Josh McDaniels travel to Cincinnati to take on the Bengals. QB Carson Palmer returns after missing the majority of the 2008 season and hopes to turn around a Bengal’s team that struggled to find its way last season. The Broncos had one of the more dramatic off seasons in NFL history as franchise QB Jay Cutler was traded to Chicago in return for QB Kyle Orton. The Broncos are getting 4.5 points in this one.
Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings take on the Cleveland Browns in Week 1. One of the favorites to take home the Lombardi Trophy in 2009, the Vikings start their quest on the road in Cleveland. The Browns have still not named their starting QB and believe this gives them an advantage. Minnesota is favored by 4 points.
The Houston Texans host the New York Jets in an early game on Sunday. Rookie QB Mark Sanchez has been named the starter for the Jets and has to open the year on the road which is always a daunting task in the NFL. The Texans hope to keep QB Matt Schaub healthy for all 16 games and rely on RB Steve Slaton to carry much of the load. The line opened at -5.5 for Houston and has moved to 4.5
Vegas favorite the Indianapolis Colts take on division rival Jacksonville inside Lucas Oil Field. Peyton Manning no longer has Marvin Harrison to throw to and former coach Tony Dungy moved on from the team also. The Jags were one of the sleeper picks of the 2008 season but were decimated by injuries. The line currently stands at 7.5 favoring Indy.
The Louisiana Superdome will be the site for the battle between the New Orleans Saints and the hapless Detroit Lions. The Saints will bring another high powered offense to the table in 2009. Pro Bowler Drew Brees is continually a top 3 quarterback in the league. Detroit hopes to begin the year by doing something they didn’t do once last year, win. Rookie QB Matthew Stafford has been named the starter and could be in for a long year. The Lions are getting 13 points in this one.
Romo and the Boys will make the long trip to Tampa, FL to play the Buccaneers. The Bucs have a lot of new faces on this year’s squad but should still be solid defensively. Romo has to prove that he can lead the Cowboys to a postseason win. Dallas is giving 6 on the road.
Division rivals Arizona and San Francisco go at it in Week 1. Arizona comes off a Super Bowl run in 08′ that virtually no one saw coming. The 49ers made an in season coaching change last year and it paid dividends. Mike Singletary led the team to a 5-4 finish and look to build on that momentum. Arizona is favored by 6.5.
The New York football Giants open with one of their most hated rivals as the Washington Redskins travel to the Meadowlands. New York has dominated this series recently. The Skins upgraded their defense with DT Albert Haynsworth but will it be enough to dethrone the Giants from the top of the division? The spread is at 6.5 favoring the G men.
The St Louis Rams travel to the Northwest to play the Seattle Seahawks. Seattle is known for having one of the biggest home field advantages in the NFL and the line reflects that. Matt Hasselbeck looked impressive in the preseason and has more weapons to utilize in 09′. The Rams are currently getting 8.5 points.
The Sunday night game features an NFC North showdown between the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers. Probably the most important game for both teams as the North will be tightly contested between these two and the Vikings. The lined opened at -3.5 favoring Green Bay and has moved to -4 at most books.
Monday night features the traditional doubheader. In the opener, the Buffalo Bills and free acquisition Terrell Owens battle with the New England Patriots. The Pats have owned this series, winning the last 8. New England is a 10.5 point favorite.
In the nightcap on Monday night, an all California showdown will take place as the San Diego Chargers face the Oakland Raiders. The Chargers come off as the preseason favorite to get to the Super Bowl from the AFC at 8 to 1 odds. The Raiders, well they’re the Raiders. San Diego -9 in this one.
