Cal will make the trek up north to take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers in a Pac 10/Big Ten match up. Minnesota looked impressive in their come from behind win against a pesky Air Force team last Saturday. Cal has outscored their opponents 111-20. The Bears are 10-1 ATS in their last 11 games on turf but just 2-7 ATS in their last 9 road games. Minnesota is getting 14 points at home.
It use to be one of the most anticipated match ups in the SEC each year. Now it is complete domination by one team. Florida has plenty to play for against Tennessee this year. Volunteer head coach Lane Kiffin called Urban Meyer a cheater when recruiting a highly touted player in the spring. Expect Meyer’s team to do the talking on Saturday. The Gators are a 4 touchdown favorite and the line is going North.
Notre Dame comes off a heartbreaking loss to rival Michigan at the Big House. Jimmy Clausen was in top form for the second straight week for the Irish but the defense was exposed by freshman QB Tate Forcier of Michigan. It will be Michigan State’s turn this weekend as they travel to South Bend. The road team is 7-1 ATS the last 8 in this series.
Former USC offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian will lead the Washington Huskies against his former team. QB Matt Barkley showed he has what it takes to be successful as a freshman when he led the Trojans on the game winning drive against Ohio State. Washington QB Jake Locker hopes to lead the Huskies to a major upset. Sarkisian’s squad as competitive with LSU for most of the game in their opener and look much improved from a year ago. UW opened as a 23 point dog but the line is down to 20.5 currently.
BCS buster the Utah Utes head to Autzen Stadium to face the Oregon Ducks. Oregon hung on for a 38 to 36 win against Purdue late last Saturday. QB Jeremiah Massoli accounted for 247 total yards and a touchdown but the Ducks struggled to score points on offense for a second straight week. Utah has started 2009 with 2 straight victories against teams they should beat. Oregon is favored by 4 points.
The Iowa Hawkeyes host Mike Stoops and the Arizona Wildcats at Kinnick Stadium. Iowa looked like the preseason top 25 team they were last Saturday when the route was on against in state rival Iowa State 35 to 3. Arizona will face its first real test of the season against Iowa that is the first of 3 straight road games. RB Nic Grigsby Jr will carry the load if the Wildcats are going to pull off the upset. The Hawks are giving 5 in this one.
A game to keep an eye on for BCS implications is Cincinnatti at Oregon State. QB Tony Pike and WR Mary Gilyard lead an explosive Bearcat offense that has scored 117 points in two games. The Bearcat defense will focus on stopping Oregon State RB Jacquizz Rodgers. Corvallis, OR is never an easy place to play and the Beavers are 16-5 ATS in their last 21 games. This game is a coin toss as Oregon State is favored by 1.5.
Max Hall and the BYU Cougars hope to pick up another win against a BCS school when Florida State comes to town. Hall led the Cougars to the biggest upset win of the season over the then #3 Oklahoma Sooners. Florida State was close to beginning 0-2 but rallied for a win against Jacksonville State last week. BYU is a touchdown favorite.
The Auburn Tigers have revenge on the agenda when Noel Devine and the West Virginia Mountaineers come calling this weekend. Auburn was embarrassed by WVU a year ago 34 to 17 but are off to a 2-0 start in the Gene Chizik era. Mountainner QB Jarret Brown made the move from WR to signal caller and has made a smooth transition so far. West Virginia is getting 6.5 points on the road.
