Week 3 College Football Power Rankings
Written September 24, 2009 by Kyle Hunter
1. Florida- The Gators weren’t quite up to par in their 23-13 win over Tennessee on Saturday, but they did end up getting the job done. Tim Tebow and the Gators are still the team with the target on their back and the one that is the clear cut favorite to win it all.
2. Texas- Texas avenged last season’s defeat against Texas Tech 34-24 on Saturday night, but they weren’t terribly impressive either. Texas Tech is down quite a bit this year, but Texas still had trouble dispatching them. October 17th and their matchup against Oklahoma is the date to circle.
3. Alabama- Alabama rolled up 53 points against North Texas last weekend. Clearly the offense appears to have found its rhythm. The Crimson Tide look to be a real contender, especially if McElroy continues to step up at the quarterback position.
4. California- California beat Minnesota on the road by two touchdowns as Jahvid Best continued to plant his name firmly on the mind of Heisman voters. The Golden Bears have a very potent offense, and the defense has improved somewhat from a year ago. Cal will host USC on October 3rd in a matchup of the Pac 10 powers.
5. Ole Miss- Ole Miss hasn’t had a test at all this season, but it will definitely start getting tougher on Thursday when they go to South Carolina. The offense is definitely ready for the big time, but is the defense ready to step up and make big stops when needed?

6. Penn State- The Nittany Lions have munched on cupcakes with the best of them so far this year, so it is difficult to get a good read on them. They will start Big Ten play this weekend, but the overall schedule is a pretty easy one for Penn State. This week the college football odds have the Lions listed as 10 point favorites at home against Iowa.
7. LSU- Maybe LSU and its tightly contested victory over Washington in Seattle wasn’t all that terrible of a showing after all. LSU has a very solid running game and they are a very deep football team.
8. Miami- Miami appears to be a much improved team this season, but time will tell how good last week’s win over Georgia Tech was. The schedule doesn’t get any easier the next couple weeks with Virginia Tech and Oklahoma on tap.
9. Oklahoma- The Sooners rolled 45-0 over a Tulsa team that does have a pretty strong offense. Maybe the Sooners are getting back to the team we all thought they could be.
10. Boise State- The 51-34 shootout win over Fresno State was both a good win and also a sign that the defense needs to improve. Boise State will need to tighten up that run defense.
11. USC- Right now the Trojans might not even be the 11th best team in the country, but because they deserve respect and we’ll know they’ll improve quite a bit they get this spot. The next few weeks will show how much this team can accomplish.
12. Ohio State- Terrelle Pryor showed fans some of his best and his worst last weekend, with big stats but a couple very poor decisions. The Ohio State defense is very good.
13. Cincinnati- The Bearcats are making everyone believe as they continue to win and do it in impressive fashion. Their 28-18 win at Oregon State ended the Beavers 26 game home non-conference winning streak.
14. TCU- The Horned Frogs continue to show that they are for real. Don’t sleep on this team as a possible BCS buster later this year.
15. Virginia Tech- The Hokies barely escaped vs. Nebraska, and this week’s test against Miami will tell us a lot about this team and where it could go
The rest…

18. Oklahoma State
