NFL Odds: Week 5

Written October 9, 2009 by Rock Henderson

The St. Louis Rams will look to secure their first win of the season when they host the undefeated Minnesota Vikings. Steven Jackson and the Rams offense have struggled mightily to get anything going offensively through four games. Minnesota is coming off a key divisional win against Green Bay. The Vikings are a 10 point favorite with a total set at 41.

Cowboy QB Tony Romo continues to be scrutinized for his performance in big games after the Boys took another one on the chin at Denver. Dallas has a chance to run its record to 3-2 this weekend at Kansas City. The Chiefs are winless in their 2009 campaign as their free agent acquisitions have yet to produce results. Kansas City is getting 8.5 points with an o/u of 42.5.

Two of the more disappointing teams in the NFC square off when the Washington Redskins hit the road to clash with the Carolina Panthers. Redskin head coach Jim Zorn better starting winning quick if he wants to keep his job for all 16 games. Carolina has done a complete 360 in the wrong direction as they have started the 09’ season with three straight losses after losing three games total last season. The Panthers are 3.5 point favorites and the total is 37.5 according to the latest NFL betting lines.

A quarterback change didn’t stop Tampa Bay from losing another game last Sunday at Washington. The defense played well enough to win, but Josh Johnson could only lead the Bucs to 13 points. Things won’t get any easier when they take on the Philadelphia Eagles at the Link. The Eagles should get QB Donovan McNabb and RB Brian Westbrook back this week. Philly is a 15 point favorite with 43 set for the total.

The G-men’s biggest concern is the health of quarterback Eli Manning, not necessarily their opponent Sunday. Al Davis has single handily turned the Raiders into the laughing stock of the NFL. Jamarcus Russell has proven again and again that he is not a pro caliber quarterback but Davis refuses to bench him. The New York football Giants are 14.5 point favorites with a 39 point o/u.

One can’t say that Eric Mangini isn’t trying to turn things around in Cleveland. In four games, he has made a quarterback change and traded his biggest playmaker in troubled WR Braylon Edwards. The Buffalo Bills need to find a way to move the ball through the air as Trent Edwards might not be the answer under center. Cleveland is a 6 point dog with a 40.5 point total.  Get a $500 match bonus over at BetUS when you open a new account and deposit $500 or more!

It is hard to believe but Cincinnati at Baltimore is a match-up that will decide who takes control of the AFC North for the time being. Both teams come into the game with one loss. The Bengals have been led by an overachieving defense and the return of QB Carson Palmer. Baltimore is its usual self on D, but second year QB Joe Flacco has turned the Raven offense into a formidable offensive attack. The Ravens are 8.5 point favorites with an o/u of 42.

Pittsburgh’s running attack returned in Week 4 against San Diego when Rashard Mendenhall scampered for over 150 yards and two scores. The #1 ranked defense a year ago has been a far cry from that this season. Detroit will host the Steelers and could possibly make it two wins in a row at Ford Field. The Lions are 10.5 point dogs with the total set at 44.

The marquee match-up in the NFC this week goes down in San Francisco when the 49ers host the Atlanta Falcons. Atlanta comes into the game off their bye week and hopes to improve their running attack that was tops in the league a year ago. The 49ers scored three defensive touchdowns last week against St Louis and added rookie WR Michael Crabtree to the roster. San Fran is a 2.5 point favorite with an o/u set at 41.

New England at Denver has many sub plots to an intriguing game between what looks to be two of the strongest teams in the AFC. Can Josh McDaniels upstage Bill Belichick in their first meeting? The Broncos are getting a field goal and the points are set at 41.

Points should be scored in bunches when the Houston Texans travel to the Valley of the Sun to battle the Arizona Cardinals. Both squads feature big time quarterbacks that have plenty of weapons to target. Arizona is listed as a 5.5 point favorite with the total set for 50 points.

NBC had something else in mind when they scheduled the Indianapolis at Tennessee game for their schedule. The Colts have done their part, starting the season 4-0 and looking like legit Super Bowl Contenders. Tennessee, on the other hand, has got off to a 0-4 start and look nothing like the team they were a year ago. The Titans are 3.5 point dogs with an o/u of 45.5 points.

Monday night features a clash between division rivals when the New York Jets head South to battle the Miami Dolphins. QB Chad Henne played well in his Miami debut as the Dolphins dominated the Bills, but he will face one of the more intimidating defenses in the league when LB Bart Scott and the Jets come callin’. Miami is getting a point and a half with a total of 36 for the game.
