Week 6 NFL Odds

Written October 15, 2009 by Rock Henderson

The Chiefs made it to overtime last week against Dallas before suffering their fifth straight loss to begin the season. They hit the road this week to take on the 2-3 Redskins. Owner Daniel Snyder might want to send a thank you note to the commissioner’s office for giving Washington home games against St. Louis, Tampa Bay and Kansas City early on. Washington is a 6.5 point favorite with a total set at 37.5.

Cincinnati will look to keep the momentum rolling when it hosts Houston. QB Carson Palmer has made a huge difference in the Bengal’s 4-1 start. Cincinnati’s defense will have its hands full with a Texan offense that features talented QB Matt Schaub and arguably the best wide receiver in the league with Andre Johnson. The Bengals are listed as 4.5 point favorites with a total of 45 for the game.

Only the Cleveland Browns could manage a 6-3 win in which their quarterback completes just 2 of 15 passes. Things won’t get any easier against Pittsburgh’s defense this Sunday. The Steelers have won two straight after beginning the season 1-2. Pittsburgh is a two touchdown favorite with an o/u of 38 points.

Baltimore hits the road for yet another tough match-up with the Minnesota Vikings. The Ravens hope to avoid their third loss in a row after falling to New England and Cincinnati previously. Minnesota has been playing at a very high level and Brett Favre has returned to 2007 form to lead the Vikes to a 5-0 start. The Ravens are getting 3 points on the road with a total set at 43.5 according to the latest NFL betting lines.

Fans in Jacksonville won’t be missing much if their game with St. Louis is blacked out on television. The Jags took a step back at Seattle last week after winning two straight. St. Louis might have a little optimism heading into this week after QB Marc Bulger returned on the Rams final drive against Minnesota and led them to a score. Jacksonville is a 10 point favorite with an over/under set at 42.

The Giants and Saints will hook up in a battle between two powerhouses of the NFC. Giant QB Eli Manning will return to the place where his dad Archie made a name for himself. New Orleans defends its home turf better than anyone in the NFL and the Saints have had two weeks to prepare for the G-men. New York is a three point dog with a total set at 47.5.

Carolina finally showed some life in the second half against Washington last Sunday in their 20-17 win. Two victories in a row might be in store when they head South to face off against Tampa Bay. The Bucs have yet to win a game in 2009 and have tried three different quarterbacks in five games. Tampa is getting a field goal at home with an o/u of 39.5.

Detroit travels to Green Bay for a divisional game against the Packers. The Lions have showed much improvement under Jim Schwartz even though it has resulted in just one win. Green Bay needs this win to keep Minnesota within striking distance for the divisional lead. The Packers are 13.5 point favorites with a 48.5 point total.

Philadelphia gets another crack at one of the bottom feeders of the league when it travels cross country to play Oakland. The Eagles ran up the score on Tampa a week ago as Donovan McNabb returned from injury. Oakland won’t get any better until Al Davis stops making personnel decisions. The Raiders are 14 point dogs with an o/u of 40.5.

A key NFC match-up will take place in Seattle when the Seahawks host the Arizona Cardinals. Matt Hasselbeck’s return for Seattle ignited a rather stagnant offense against Jacksonville in a win. Arizona’s defense stepped up against Houston with a goal line stand to preserve a 28-21 victory. Seattle is favored by 3 points with the total set at 47.

The New York Jets hope to end a two game slide when Buffalo comes to town. The usually dominant Jet defense was exposed by Miami’s running game last Monday night. Buffalo has started 1-4 and could be looking to make changes before the trade deadline with a loss here. The Bills are getting 9.5 points with an o/u set at 38.

Tennessee will look to notch its first win of the year when they take on New England in Foxboro. Jeff Fisher has to be wondering what happened to his 2008 playoff team after a winless start. The Pats offense stalled in the second half against Denver, but will benefit here from a banged up Titans secondary. New England is a 9 point favorite with a total set at 43.

Chicago at Atlanta is an intriguing game between two NFC teams trying to make a case as one of the top-tier squads in their conference. Atlanta’s offense went bonkers against the 49ers last Sunday as WR Roddy White alone had over 200 yards receiving. Chicago’s Jay Cutler has settled down after a rocky start and got the Bears on the right track. The Bears are getting a field goal with an over/under of 46.

Denver continues their run as the league’s surprise team of 2009 with their 5-0 start. The Broncos have managed to win games in every imaginable way and face a stern test at division rival San Diego Monday night. GM AJ Smith spoke publicly about how soft his defense was and they had two weeks to stew over that. The Chargers are 3.5 point favorites with a total set at 44.
