West Virginia 2009 Football Predictions
Written June 28, 2009 by InfoPlays
The West Virginia Mountaineers have more talented weapons on offense, led by QB Jarrett Brown and RB Noel Devine. Much of the season depends on if the new offensive line can keep it together. It would be a surprise if Brown is unable to handle the starting job this fall. The defense should be improved, which might come in handy to give the O-line time to cohere. One thing is certain, the Mountaineers will contend for another Big East title in 2009. NCAA football odds show the Mountaineers listed at +10000 to win the 2010 BCS National Championship.
Offense: Quarterback Jarrett Brown has waited three years to get this opportunity. Now, all he has to do is replace Pate White, who accounted for 25 school, conference and NCAA records in a brilliant four-year career where he compiled more than 10,000 total yards. Brown is a better passer, and he also has enough mobility to make key yards with his feet. He has won both of his career starts, including a three-overtime win against Rutgers in 2007 that prevented the Scarlet Knights from the Big East’s BCS bid. The help will come from Noel Devine, a junior who rolled up 1,289 yards and averaged 6.3 yards/carry last year. He is the top returning rusher in the Big East, and he’s also a threat out of the backfield, catching 35 passes in ‘08.
Alric Arnett is the leader at wide receiver after catching 35 balls a year ago, including six for touchdowns. Bradley Starks is also back after playing big in their bowl win over UNC last season. The offensive line, which has been a solid unit in Morgantown for years, is a reason for concern this season. The Mountaineers lose two-time All-American Ryan Stanchek, Greg Isdander and Jake Figner up front. Selvish Capers is a proven option at right tackle, and Eric Jobe did a good job at center while filling in for injured starter Mike Dent last season. It’s going to take some time for this inexperienced unit to create chemistry.

Defense: WVU had one of the nation’s stingiest defenses last season, allowing just 17.0 points/game. They shouldn’t drop off one bit this season considering the Mountaineers have 18 players on the two-deep with at least one career start. They are particularly deep at linebacker. The return of Reed Williams, who missed most of last season with shoulder surgery, gives the team three veterans at the position. He and Anthony Leonard, who had 59 tackles last season in Williams’ place, will be battling it out for the starting job.
Scooter Berry moves from end to nose tackle up front, opening up a starting spot for emerging pass rusher Julian Miller, who recorded 3.5 sacks in the month of November. Berry and defensive tackle Chris Neild should do a solid job in stuffing the run. Cornerback Brandon Hogan is the man to watch in the secondary after recording 60 tackles and deflecting seven passes last season. Strong safety Sidney Glover finished with 61 stops in 2008, and forced a key fumble in the win over UNC. There seems to be enough depth to fill the openings at corner and bandit safety heading into the fall.
