West Virginia at Marshall

This Friday the West Virginia Mountaineers will head across the state to take on the Marshall Thundering Herd for the “Friends of the Coal Bowl” Trophy. West Virginia has dominated this series going 9-0 against the Thundering Herd, including a 24-7 win last year at home. If you are interested in betting on this game, the oddsmakers currently have the Mountaineers 13.5 point favorites over the Thundering Herd.

West Virginia opened up the season against Coastal Carolina, and it was all Mountaineers from the get go, as West Virginia went on to win 31-0. Geno Smith threw for 216 yards and two touchdowns, while senior running back Noel Devine ran for 111 yards and a touchdown. The defense allowed just 186 total yards of offense. Not exactly the toughest opponent, but the Mountaineers did what they were suppose to do and will ride that momentum into the game this week.

Marshall didn’t have such an easy draw to start the season, as they had to go up against the No.2 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes, and outside of a blocked field goal for a touchdown, it was pretty ugly for the Thundering Herd. Marshall wound up losing the game 45-7, gaining just 199 yards of total offense. Marshall could simply not get anything going on the ground, as they had just 44 yards rushing against the Buckeyes. I think we will see a much better performance out of Marshall this weekend, as it’s never easy opening up the season on the road against a team like Ohio State.

Looking at the Odds: When it comes down to making a bet on the game this Friday, I think you have to at the success West Virginia has had over the years against Marshall, as they have won the last four meetings by an average of 24.5 points. Marshall allowed the Buckeyes to rush for 280 yards in the season opener, and this week they have to go up against Devine, who could end up torching the Thundering Herd for 200 yards himself. I think you have to lay the points and count on another impressive showing from West Virginia in this one.
