West Virginia at South Florida Football Odds
Written October 28, 2009 by Hector Garza
Unranked South Florida (5-2) will be trying to rebound off of disappointing back to back losses as they take on West Virginia this Friday night. The Mountaineers (6-1) are now ranked #20 and are looking to stay in contention for the Big East title with a win against the Bulls. Last year South Florida lost a close one 13-7, and they’re the underdogs by 3 points playing at home according to the latest college football odds. Game time is set for 8:00 PM ET on ESPN 2 and the total is 49. With their only loss coming against Auburn, the Mountaineers have 420.9 ypg using a balanced attack of almost 230 passing ypg combined with over 190 rushing ypg, which is first in the conference. Junior RB Noel Devine has led the charge on the ground, running for over 130 ypg with a 6.7 ypc average and an impressive 10 td’s. Last week in a 28-24 win over UConn, Devine ran amok for 171 yards in the 2nd half alone. QB Jarrett Brown has had a good season completing 67.1% of his passes for 9 td’s and 6 int’s.
The reason last week’s game against UConn was so close was because the defense got burned for 378 yards passing yards. While they have garnered 12 interceptions through 7 games, they’re currently allowing over 235 passing ypg. They’ve done much better against the run, averaging under 87 ypg, but they haven’t played a team that’s been a true challenge. Through 7 games this year, they have yet to face a team in the top 25, and USF could expose that weakness.
The Bulls have 1 fewer td scored than West Virginia this year at 27, but their opponents have been tougher. Against three ranked opponents they’re 1-2, but the experience could pay off this week. Their offense has averaged 380 ypg with just over 200 passing and 178.3 rushing ypg. Freshman QB B.J. Daniels is more of a dual threat, throwing for 7 td’s and 6 int’s while leading the team in rushing with just under 60 ypg and 4 td’s. Last week the air attack stumbled, as South Florida put up a total of 90 yards against Pitt.
With the offense struggling, the normally stout defense hasn’t been able to hold the fort. Pitt ran for 214 yards last week and two weeks ago Cincinnati had 189 yards on the ground. The strength of the defense has been against the pass, as they rank 1st in the conference giving up 182.1 passing ypg. But stopping West Virginia’s Devine will be the key, and the Bulls are 7th in the conference in that area giving up 132.4 ypg.
Since the Mountaineers are ranked 9th nationally against the run, the Bulls will need to get more out of their passing game. They’re playing at home and are hungry for a win after losing back to back against ranked opponents. They also have the experience of playing against stronger teams. South Florida will no doubt be focused on stopping Devine and giving West Virginia a test on the road.
