This is the first year for head coach Bill Stewart, who took over after Rich Rodriguez bolted for Michigan right before the Fiesta Bowl. He was supposed to have a chance to get back to the BCS with Pat White still under center and the talented running back Noel Devine joining six other starters returning to an offense that averaged more than 40 points per game a year ago.
When the Mountaineers took on Villanova the first week of the season, everything looked good. White had five touchdown passes to match a career-high in a 48-21 win. Then disaster struck as two weeks ago they only managed three points, lost two fumbles, and threw for only 72 yards in a 24-3 loss against East Carolina. That game marked the first for West Virginia without a touchdown since October of 2001, when they lost 45-3 to a No. 1 ranked Miami Hurricane team.
The bad news for Steward and the Mountaineers is that Colorado has a better defensive front than the Pirates, allowing only 59 rushing yards per game over their first two contests. That means that even though White and Devine both had 90 yards against East Carolina, they will have a tougher time of it on Thursday night. If West Virginia can’t move the ball through the air, then they could be in trouble. If you think West Virginia will cover the -3 odds, then bet the game at Sportsbook.com and get a 100% bonus on your first winning wager.
Colorado looked good in a 38-17 win the first week over their in-state rivals, the Colorado State Rams. Last week though they might have been looking past Eastern Washington, as the Buffaloes struggled to a 31-24 win in which they trailed with under four minutes to go in the game.
The offense has depended heavily on the arm of the head coach’s son. Dan Hawkins’ boy Cody has completed 72% of his passes for 475 yards and two scores. However, the team is going to need to find some balance if they want to win this game and battles in the Big 12 North. Colorado is gaining only 3.5 yards with each carry, good for the No. 90 spot in the country. Freshman running back Darrell Scott has 24 totes for 104 yards and a single touchdown. He is highly touted and came in as one of the top running back recruits out of high school, proving he is also a threat to catch the ball with three receptions for 33 yards in their last game. If you think Colorado can get back on track, bet the +3 spread at Sportsbook.com using your credit or debit card.
