Western Michigan Football Predictions 2009

Written July 15, 2009 by InfoPlays

2009 Western Michigan Football PredictionsThere is some rebuilding to do in 2009 for the Western Michigan Broncos. They lose six players who made first or second-team All-MAC last season, but the Broncos have been to two straight bowl games and should be MAC contenders once again because of an explosive offense led by quarterback Tim Hiler. The defense was respectable a year ago, but with just three returning starters on this side of the ball, WMU may not get enough stops to reach another 9-win season. Offense: Western Michigan will go as far as their offense will take them. It will take time for a young defense to come around, so this offense that returns seven starters will have to carry the load early. Senior quarterback Tim Hiller has already thrown for 8.080 yards and 76 touchdowns in three years. He has a great grasp on Bill Cubit’s offense that does a good job of holding the ball until the last possible second in order to find the open receiver. The running game should take pressure off of Hiller, with a 1-2 punch of senior Brandon West and sophomore Aaron Winchester. West rushed for a team-high 1,026 yards last year, and both can catch the ball out of the backfield.

Juan Nunez, coming off a third-team All-MAC selection at receiver last year, should be the top returning target after catching 57 passes for 701 yards and seven scores in 2008. He had plays of at least 30 yards in seven different games a year ago. Redshirt freshman Seth Patterson is a great prospect at one receiver spot, while converted quarterback Robert Arnheim figures to man the other wideout position. Matt Stevens gets the call at tight end, with two of his six catches from a year ago resulting in touchdowns in goal-line situations. Jamelle Murray sat out the 2008 season after a bout with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He is one of the best feel-good stories in college football, catching six balls for 67 yards in the final spring scrimmage. The offensive line is strong, versatile and athletic. This unit returns four starters in tackle Anthony Parker, guards Nick Clemens and Philip Swanson and center Paul Wasikowski.

Defense: The Broncos will be doing some inventing on the fly on this side of the ball. WMU returns just three defensive starters, but they do have quite a few players who saw significant minutes in backup roles. Defensive end Justin Braska is the biggest playmaker returning. He registered 52 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and six sacks in 2008. Defensive tackle Cody Cielenski will line up beside Braska after posting 36 tackles with 10 coming for a loss a year ago. These two will yield a lot of the attention from opposing offenses.

The linebacker position is the strength, though. First-team All-MAC selection Austin Pritchard returns after finishing second on the team with 86 tackles and 12.5 tackles for loss, which was tops for WMU. Mitch Zajac started five games his freshman year with 29 tackles to show for it. Sophomore defensive back Josh Price leads a young secondary that lost three All-MAC performers. This is the biggest area of concern for the Broncos, so look for opposing teams to air it out a ton this year.
