Western Michigan vs. Nebraska Picks

Written August 28, 2008 by Jason Lowry

This weekend the Western Michigan Broncos head to Cornhusker country as they get ready to take on Nebraska, as both teams get the 2008 season underway. The Cornhuskers have won 22 straight times on opening day, and a win this weekend would keep the nations longest streak of doing so alive and going. Both teams are coming off disappointing seasons going 5-7 and failing to make a bowl game, but when you talk Nebraska football that is just not good enough, and that is why Bill Callahan was fired from head coach. Bo Pelini is the new man in charge and it will be his job to make sure Western Michigan doesn’t put a damper on the season in the first week.

When you talk about the Broncos offensive philosophy its likely going to be pass first run second, as the team not only has just two starters coming back on the offensive line, but the running game really lacks a playmaker. Quarterback Tim Hiller will be slinging the ball around the field, and there is no question his go to guy is First Team All-MAC receiver Jamarko Simmons who got 84 passes last season. If Tiller gets time to throw the football, this unit will again be able to put some points on the board. As for the Cornhuskers the offense was pretty solid last year bringing in over 33 points a game, and with a running back like Marlon Lucky there is no question this team should be a force on the ground this season. Last year the Cornhuskers were happy to see Joe Gantz emerge as a star throwing all over teams at the end of the season, though the talent at receiver is not as good as it was, its likely to see a very solid season out of the QB. When we talk about the Broncos defense they have the talent, but its a matter of results this season. After giving up nearly 180 yards a game on the ground last season the team needs to improve or its going to be another long year. They have two studs at defensive end in Greg Marshall and Zach Davidson, both racked up 6.5 sacks last season. At linebacker the team is counting on the play of Boston McCornell, as he led the team in tackles in 2007. The secondary has its playmakers as well, and the two best out of this group is Londen Fryar and Louis Delmas. As for the Cornhuskers the defense it needs to improve off the miserable performance they had a year ago, and with Pelini in charge it should happen pretty fast. Up front the team brings back all 4 starters, and just like the Broncos they have some solid pass rushers in Zach Potter and Barry Turner. As for the linebacking group its pretty thin, and they are going to need some players to step up, such as junior Phillip Dillard who has seen action before. In the secondary the team will be counting on the play of corner Armando Murillo and safety larry Asante to get the job done. Bet Nebraska -14 at JustBet.com
