2009 WGC-CA Championship Picks & Predictions

Written by

WGC-CA ChampionshipIts been a pretty good start to the 2009 season for golf fans, as the anticipation of Tiger Woods coming back into action has got the world dying to see this guy golf after 8 months of watching golf without him. Woods finally made his appearance back on the links a couple weeks ago at the WGC-Accenture Matchplay Championship, but many still were unable to see him play, as he was knocked out in the 2nd round. This week Woods and nearly every top golfer in the world will be hitting up the Blue Monster of Dural in the 2009 WGC-CA Championship, and event Woods has dominated in the past winning 7 of the past 9. While Woods is the odds on favorite and an easy pick to win this weekend, I have found 3 other golfers that I feel could be right in the thick of things come Sunday.

Geoff Ogilvy +1200 odds to win

Ogilvy has had an outstanding start to the 2009 season with wins coming at the Mercedes-Benz Championship and The WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, and is the defending champion of the event this weekend. A big part of Ogilvy’s success has been his outstanding play with his irons and his putting, as he ranks 24th in greens in regulation and 2nd in putting average. Ogilvy finished tied for 3rd here in 2008, so this is a course he is very familiar and confident with, and I see no reason why this guy won’t come out firing this weekend.

Zach Johnson +2500 odds to win

Johnson has also had a pretty good start to the 2009 season, as he has a 6th place finish at the Mercedes-Benz Championship, and a win at the Sony Open. Johnson is not typically known for his driving, but he is currently 13th in total driving this season, as he is 12th in driving accuracy at 72%. Johnson’s accuracy doesn’t stop there as he is currently 5th in greens in regulation, and if he continues to play like this he is going to keep on winning. Johnson has played well here at the WGC-CA Championship, as he has finished tied for 9th in each of the past two years. I expect Johnson to have a very strong showing this weekend, and if the putts are falling he could very easily win this thing.

Adam Scott +3500 odds to win

Unlike the other two players mentioned Scott does not have a win in 2009, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been playing some good golf, as he finished 2nd at the Sony Open. Scott is one of the best golfers the world has to offer, and this guy is still in his late 20′s, so there will be plenty more to come from Scott. In last year’s WGC-CA Championship Scott finished tied for 9th right along side Johnson, and he would have finished much better had he not shot even in the final round.
