2010 WGC CA Championship Predictions

Written by

It was a very impressive showing last week by Camilo Villegas, as he easily took home the top spot at the Honda Classic, winning by five shots over Anthony Kim. This week Villegas will have to be even better if he wants to take home the trophy at the 2010 WGC CA Championship, as the field resembles that of a major tournament event, not that the field at the Honda Classic was weak by any means. A stacked field shouldn’t be all that surprising, as we are just five weeks away from the Masters, and this tournament serves as a great opportunity to see how you stack up against the best in the game.

The CA Championship will be played at Doral Golf Resort & Spa, where it has been played each season since 2007. Phil Mickelson will look to defend his title this weekend, but the field will be without it’s toughest competition over the years, as Tiger Woods remains out of the game. It still figures to be a great weekend of golf, and here is a look at the favorites, guys in the middle of the pack, and the long shots I feel have a chance to win this weekend.

Favorites: Phil Mickelson +700, Steve Stricker +1200, Paul Casey +1600, Camilo Villegas +2000, Lee Westwood +2000, Jim Furyk +2200, Geoff Ogilvy +2200, Ian Poulter +2200, and Rory McIlrou +22000

While Mickelson is looking to defend his title this weekend, Ogilvy is the only other player in this group that has won this event, as he took home the title in 2008. Still these two aren’t even in my top three to win out of this group, as I think guys Stricker, Casey, and Villegas have the best games right now to win this weekend. If I had to pick just one, it would Stricker.

Middle of the Pack: Anthony Kim +3000, Retief Goosen +3000, Dustin Johnson +3000, Vijay Singh +3000, Padraig Harrington +3000, Martin Kaymer +3000, Robert Allenby +3000, Ernie Els +3000, Hunter Mahan +3500, and Zach Johnson +3500

Another great group of golfers here, and I think anyone of these guys could end up making a serious run at this thing. You can’t ever count out the veterans of Singh, Goosen, and Els, but I think that we can expect a lot more out of guys like Kim, Mahan, and Zach Johnson. Not only is Kim my pick to win out of this group, he is my pick to win the whole thing this weekend.

Long shots: Sergio Garcia +4000, Nick Watney +4000, Luke Donald +4500, Sean O’Hair +4500, Robert Karlsson +5500, Stewart Cink +5500, Angel Cabrera +6000, David Toms +7000, Lucas Glover +7000, Y.E. Yang +7000 and Adam Scott +7000

This just lets you know how tough a field it is when you have a list of long shots that includes the likes of these guys.  Watney was the runner-up to Mickelson at this event last year and figures to be a big threat again this weekend. There isn’t really anyone on this list that would surprise me if they won this weekend, making it difficult to pick just one guy out of this group. I am going to go out on a bit of limb here and take Garcia out of this group, as I feel he has the best game out of this group.
